B.P.R 2,798
just back from the vets with my whippet pup. after her breaking her left leg not long ago she has been getting the leg built back up slowly but surely. yesterday she hurt her leg, the right on this time and took her straight to the vets, diagnosis was a sprain but took her back today and my fears was confirmed. she has broken her right leg in exactly the same place as her left. gutted. cant believe this i really cant. my dogs get the best i can give them and im thinking i must be doing something wrong for her to break both her back legs at only 5 1/2 months old. im feeding her on the best i can afford and the vets ruled out any bone conditions (weak bones etc) and said she is looking in great shape and condition. maybe just a case of bad luck but im still shocked that it has happened again only a couple of weeks after getting the all clear from the last break. i could understand if her left leg was re-broken but not her right this time. like i said im questioning everything ive done with her and tried so hard to get her back to full health. trying to stay positive but after being caged for 6-8 weeks and then walked for 2 weeks shes back in the cage for the forseeable future. no ferreting this season and were back to square one. either im doing something seriously wrong or ive got one seriously unlucky dog. cant fecking believe it Quote Link to post
mighty celt 996
for the dog 2 break 2 legs at such a young age it must be down 2 the breeding pal.the best thing you could is rehome her as a pet,if u start working her when she recovers and matures its only going 2 happen again and wont be fair on you or the dog. sandymere 8,263
The first break would have left it very out of condition and unbalanced physically, then it probable just overdid it, made a mistake and the damage was done! Whippets are always pushing the boundaries and when unfit bad shit happens. Take your time and get a good base baseline fitness prior to any galloping when bone set. Home reared pups tend to go a little mad during exercise compared to field reared and tend to have less well developed muscle-skeletal systems than field reared so more injuries. Road work with bike or running dependent on age ability to build strength prior to faster stuff, take it running at heel off road, then once fitter let off lead at the end of the run, gradually building up distance. Starting very short distance at first and very gradual build up. I did this with a youngster, combined with swimming, with fractures to the base of the spine and a wasting rear leg, he’s now lamping well, took some time but worked. Regards s let me know if you want more detail. 1 Quote Link to post

J.DOG 1,355
Unlucky mate but it doesn't sound like it's your fault if I was you I'd get it a good pet home cos if it's down to the dogs breeding than you will only have more problems in the future Quote Link to post
fallow buck 18
so sorry to hear this mate, like earlier posts have said thats really bad luck,, my bitch broke her front leg we had it pinned and plated for the pin to move and have to have that removed with yet more crate rest,, they hate being confined especially when they have had a taste of freedom, perhaps while the pup was putting the weight on the one leg due to the other being bandaged up that with the weak puppy bones this caused the bone to weaken and then with the other leg healed puppy got to have freedom again where the break in second leg presented itself. all i can say is I am so sorry it is a really hard time for dog and owner alike! if it were me i would do what the person above said and throw yourself into healing this leg and gradually do swimming etc to build the strength up, wish you best of luck friend. your in for a tough time BUT it may be worth it and end up with the best working partner you've ever had!! my bitch's leg is healed now perfectly but she broke while out working, the confidence is no longer there so she is now retired to the sofa but physically the leg is sound now but it took a bloody long time!! hope everything soon changes for you but try not to beat yourself up about it, negative thoughts wont help you or the dog. feel free to pm me,all the best fallow x p.s to those who run their pups at 6 months expecting them to run fifty rabbits, take note of just how senstive puppy bones and legs are!! 2 Quote Link to post
B.P.R 2,798
Thanks for all the replies. The pups going nowhere. She was bought for ferreting and whether she cut the mustard or not she was staying put. I'll do everything within my power to get her right and go from there. If shes fit enough to run in the long run then I'll have her out and see how she goes. If not then she will soley be a pet and lie life on the couch. Another dog isn't an option for me. My dogs are part of the family and I'll just have to live with the outcome of her leg. She was a pet first/ worker second only she hasn't even had a chance to work. Fingers crossed for her. There is hope. I'll take it extremely slow this time round and hope for the best. I wasn't after a lamping dog I was just after a companion for ferreting and in sure she will still be able to do that 3 Quote Link to post

staffs riffraff 1,068
Know how you feel mate I have had a terrible run with injuries to dogs n now myself in last 12/13 month and my young lurcher broke her leg in march then had problems with the pin inside her leg and that was took out about 6 week ago even though dhe fine now would never put another dog through that again I did the selfish thing and had her fixed when the best thing would have been to pts but if it ain't got have an op just rest then that ain't too bad but how many times is it going to happen ? As been said could be bad breeding, bad luck anything but if they ain't doing what comes natural to them they ain't got a proper life and few people Iv spoke to said they wouldn't do it again Good luck with it whatever you do matr Quote Link to post
