wirral countryman 2,110
Bigdreams97,just a word of caution mate, not all ferrets will work these days due to the amount of pets being bred from, this has gone on for quite a few years now so make sure if you get some from working stock and handle them as much as possible,as for training then you need to practise putting the locator collar on as it is a bit fiddly and if not put on tight enough will result in it coming off, first season ferrets will not always work the deeper warrens just staying shallow and some can dither around the mouth of the hole when trying to pick up,so you see there is some training required, also do not buy one ferret as its cruel keeping 1,they need company and the larger warrens will require more than one,I keep ten as I ferret 2-3 times a week and even breeding my own for years I get the odd one thats not up to standard, they can be as different as dogs so buy wisely off working stock, hope this helps you decide,WM 1 Quote Link to post

graham4877 1,181
get some tubes/pipes in the cage with them so they are used to getting picked up as they come out of a hole! Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Ive got 2 of mine coming to me now if I squeak my lips. Pretty useful when ferreting the hedgerows Quote Link to post
rapidjenky 97
make sure you try and work new starters in sets that have rabbits in them. nothing worse then trying to get new ferrets down a set when theres nothing home. i know you can never be sure theres rabbits home but just dont try to put them in sets you can see havent been used for along time. i hand feed my ferrets and give them a squeak everytime i give them abit. now when i squeak they come running. i can walk the field and they will follow me like dogs lol. as said above very handy when your out. make sure they get used to being handled, its a nightmear when you spend half your day trying to catch a ferret in the mouth of a hole. just take them out, find a nice small ish set thats in use and put them in mate, instinct will take over if they actually come across a live bunny down there they learn real quick what the games about! trigger2 3,211
how hard is it to train a ferret... or do you even need to? thought it was a instinct i always choose the smallest warrens i can for the first few outings with my young ferrets then gradually put them in bigger and bigger warrens as the season goes on. i like to try and treat a young ferret like a young dog make life as easy as possible when starting them off. it also helps to have a good marking dog so as you know theres a rabbit in warren almost every time, then you know if the ferrets doing his/her job.
