Not sure how you could work with socks and an orange for locating ferrets but at least your toes will be warm and plenty of vitamin c ; )

You should never use a muzzle it's an old timmers thing, but the ferret can't defend it's self if it comes across a rat or the like.

anyone still use a line?

Yes i have used a line before with one of my hobs, ok it can lead you on a windy trail but you will get there in the end, just make sure it is a good hob that will sit down there while you dig! have used collars before but not owned any, whats the worst that can happen you spend a few hours digging!

I hope not, would rather work the ferrets on a good feed with out a line than dig on a line, times ain't that hard are they? Would always choose to work on the collar but if I was skint would just put it down free running rather than on a line.

You dont use a line all the time, you work gills without the line, then if you get a gill sitting down there, send down a hob with a line on knoted every 5ft and start digging.

I have two mark 1s when I started there were none, but now I wouldn't go out without one, have decided to move forward with technology and have been putting the word out, that I would like a mark 3 from that fat man, who climbs down chimneys in December. might be kidding myself could be Socks and an Orange.

I know how to use a line my point is theres a hell of a lot of digging useing a line, would rather just work well fed ferrets so they don't lie up, when knotting a line you put different numbers of knots in so you know how far of you are by counting the knots. My grandad always used a line as they where no locaters when he was ferreting but it's a pain in the arse, would rather leave a rabbit than wreak a set by digging all over it.

I don't think digging a hole will wreck a set ? . Would leaving dead rabbits wreck a set ,? Will well bred ferrets not go to work on rabbits regardless of wether well fed or not ,??????

Well i cant see the harm in alot of digging, its a good luagh, and you can hardly ruin a set by digging, terrier lads do it all the time and dig a far lot deeper and enjoy it, i dont see why every one sees digging such a big chore

We use a mk 3 most of the time but to be honest i have worked ferrets for 33 yrs and never lost a ferret before i used a locator the advantages of a locator is to pinpoint where the ferrret is so its easier and quicker to dig to and you may get a few rabbits bottled up a dead end so you can move on quicker to the next bury i do find a big disagvantage with locators is the catch on purse nets but its personal choice wheather you use one or not i use one but if i didn't have one i would not overly worry about it as said never lost a ferret either way just takes longer on a kill without one

Depends on the land BC...ok in nice soil, sandy shallow sets. You would'nt be to keen to get the shovel out on every set on my land...limestone quarries & usual depth of 4ft plus :boogy: ,yes it's fun but i'd rather the rabbits were in the net  .I will dig but for me it's a last resort but each to there own
