doris 6
mate took in a good looking saluki cross rescue. It was daftt as feck wouldnt listen to voice or whistle commands. A woman trainer in the area suggested the clicker , and the difference was amazing. I agree that its not ideal in the hunting environment, but a dog that was a liability is now under some control. Forager 14
The clicker is replaced with verbal and or hand commands Give it a try you will be amazed with the results What’s it going to cost two or three quid for a clicker? Forager
cmccmc 24
I used a clicker to shape my lurcher pup's retrieve and delivery to hand and it worked really well, I'd use it again in future. Different strokes for different folks, but I'd personally rather use a clicker than (e.g.) ear pinch to get a solid and reliable retrieve. I understand why others wouldn't be interested though. skycat 6,173
You don't need a clicker: a word will do just as well. Clickers might be OK in a training situation, but not in the field. Condition the dog to respond to a word the same way as clicker training is introduced: I use the word YESS, emphasising the SS at the end. Works brilliantly, but you have to do the ground work first. Sirius 1,391
I think some people are confussed you only use a clicker initially, so there really is little need to take one into the hunting field, as you phase it out normally? All the click noise does is tell the action it performed was correct and will get a reward, you can use a command in the same way. It can be a really easy and effective way to train a dog Edited November 2, 2011 by Sirius
