The other day I got to witness a nice retrieve  .A gun had shot a high bird out of the wood which fell out into the loch, with the wind blowin' it away out farther by the minute,me with a Terrier had no chance,up comes another beater with his Black Lab,and a Gun with his Yellow lab(posh me thinks !).Well in they went 10foot ,the yellow quits comes of ,even after coaching on? out goes the Black, gets sight ,zeros' in.Way out he goes. Me with little Knowledge of Gundogs,I'm thinking he's going under. No, not to be ! picks bird turns swims back , in he comes to a Happy Owner and Gun .To me what a swim, big dogs just went up in my Eyes .I would have been Grinning from ear to ear if I owned a dog like that !,but for the Yellow dogs owner,In the terrier world, he would have been seen to own a Jacker :icon_redface: ?would he discard it ? I think not..

Over the years of being around the shoots,it seems to me the Blacks seem to do better,is it the dog or Owners that get them to achieve ? I have a Terrier that is more willing to go in to the water, than some Guns' Labs,Springers? :hmm:

Dogs really have their uses!

I went roost shooting today with a solid member of the THL and he used his lurcher to retrieve the shot birds. Excellent he was too, knew the job, did as he was bid and found birds in thick uncoppiced woods with ease. He was bloody fast doing it

By all accounts he is an excellent runner too - master of all trades? I've seen some of it for myself now.

Cheers

Duncan.

I think it all depends on the individual dog. I used to have a yellow lab that would do anything and go anywhere to get his bird. I was only young and didnt really realise what i had in him. I was picking up on an evening flight one day and sent him on a pricked bird that dropped on the other side of the lake, he swam 100 yards to it, chased it til in dived then caught it under water, as he was half way back another bird dropped on the far side and he turned round swam back and managed to pick that too while still keeping hold of the pricked bird. He than swam all the way back and retrieved both to hand. I got a few kind words off the keeper too in front of the guns, a proud day for a 15yr old.

You do seem to see a lot more quality working blacks than yellows, but we have a couple of quality yellow labs on the shoot.

I've always been more a fan od springers, mainly because that is what i have always been around, and have done a lot more rough shooting and beating than picking up.

Was always impressed with watching them fly into icy fast flowing rivers, where birds had been shoot and dropped in up stream, and be directed back and forth in order to line them up with the bird travelling down, grab it as it came past, retrieve it out and then throw themselves straight back in.

Why should the yellow lab owner discard his dog? It'll just need it's confidence building with training. That may even have been it's first ever attempt at a water retrieve especially one further out than it's master can throw a dummy.

We've got all colours of lab on our local shoot and they all work as well as each other.

To Stevie_87, well done mate, that must have been some moment.

I Wasn't saying the Owner should "discard", It wasn't a Novice dog ?,I was pointing out ,from my little Experience round gundogs, they, do Not ! get discarded as easily as Some Terrriers. When regarded a failure :cray: .Gundog men seem to have more patience regarding their wards !

it's a bit different mate a gundog can be coaxed/taught to do what you want even after a failure but a terrier that jacks aint going to get better

Danw,To true !,but It "should" be able to be, put to another use,Ratting ,Bushing etc,if not by the owner.Give it to someone else" free to a good home",Some kid could get a bit of fun out of a "Jacker " :hmm:

Yeah I agree, depends a bit on the owner though, I wont let a dog from my line go to anyone else that doesn't understand that it hasn't made the grade and it's never bred from unfortunately some people will give that guarantee then the next minute it's had a litter much better to chap it and know your line won't be bastardised
