chest injury on my bulllcross

Recommended Posts

my bullcross ran into something whilst lamping last sunday. he had a bump on his chest as he seemed fine i ran him on then i noticed it gettin bigger so called it a night. got home put some muscle embriation on it. in the mornin it was still quite swollen but noticed alot of bruiseing round his chest he was stiff & a bit quite but otherwise ok eating & drinking. weds just gone it was still swollen & by this time i thought it was a hematoma or an infection & decided to prick it with a needle alot of watery blood came out & i was sure that would be the end of it. next day it was swollen up again so i thought it might need it doing again but it refilled again. the dog has alot of blacky bruiseing underneath & round the chest but otherwise is back to his old self but the lumps not going down. i've delt with lots of injury's over the 20 or so years of running dogs but this ones a puzzler. i have tryed cold compresses, muscle swelling lubricients, pricking it & anti inflamamitries. think vets tomorrow? just wondered if anyone else has come across this or could give any advice? thanks.

The dog has damaged blood vessels beneath the skin, which are still bleeding. I had this once many years ago in a lurcher bitch: the swelling got as big as a small melon: the vet lanced it once but it just filled up again. It will keep on doing this until the blood vessels which are leaking have sealed themselves. So don't try to drain it. It will go down eventually. As long as there is no serious heat in the area which would mean infection it should be OK. Don't put any embrocation on it at all, and keep the dog quiet as possible. Just a little lead walk for 10 a day to stop him getting too stiff.

Also, the black bruising is blood from possibly torn muscle, but also from the bleeding beneath the skin. Either way, don't run the dog for at least 2-3 weeks after the swelling has gone down. You don't want to start everything bleeding inside again by running the dog too soon.

If, once the swelling has gone down, the dog is lame or stiff, see a good Greyhound vet in case there is muscle damage.
