Hanibals first day out...

Recommended Posts

today me and my 7month old hob polecat went to look for some bunny's. it went so terribly wrong. we found a 18hole set and netted all the holes up and put hanibal down around 5mins later he came out but no rabbits came. we then moved to a smaller set which i didnt think would have any little inhabitants as some of the wholes were filled leaves and mud. as i thought no rabbits came. me and my hob then went to another field and then found a lovely oped 6 whole set. we put him down and out came the first after about 2minsthen about another minute later another rabbit came out from the same whole, lucky i put a net down straight away. so after 2hrs out i only came back with 2 rabbits :( .

I wouldn't say that went so terribly wrong mate!

- Your 7 month kit can obviously do the job needed of him, which is good to know!

- You didn't blank! And you didn't bolt the only bunnies of the day out of the one bolt hole you missed!

- You didn't have any crazy digs or waiting about!

- And all ferrets and folk came home in one piece!

Could be a lot worse!

haha sorry im new to ferreting :icon_redface: . the thing is i dont have more experienced ferrets to use...

itsallways good to have seasoned ferret on hand to bolt any rabbits that the young ferret may have missed, but if not keep using the young un it ll soon learn mate.holes =rabbits so will learn soon enough.

Aye when you put 18 nets down the last thing you want is a young ferret saying theres nothing at home i always check there right for there first season by running a older ferret threw the burrows after them

i'm having that problem with one of my kits this year the thing is i dont think its going deep enough into the warren i put it down and it kept poppin out of other holes straight away put mum down and its all quiet (tell tale sign shes working!) and then every rabbit down their decides to vacate at the same time :icon_eek: bit of adrenelin when theirs only two pairs of hands

Bare in mind that your kit is still growning, they're like pups, they get tired fast until they develop some stamina, just keep putting it in a few holes and it will get better with a little practice, two on your first outing with a ferret as young as yours is a good start

As said mate, that is not a bad start at all.

A couple of rabbits and experiance for your hob.

You may want to concentrate on the smallish warrens at the minute 18 holes might be a bit much for him now.

Well done though mate keep at it.
