mal mason 7
I have trained and flown a few HH in the past and have just started with a young female, when i brought her home she had a large crop of doc and the next morning didnt cast so i waited all day nothing? the next day she cast a very small one the size of a thumb nail, so must have shit the rest out as there was some very thick green shit about, when i flew her on the creance yesterday she had 4 doc this morning no cast again so waited till half 3 and still no cast, just wondering if any one got any ideas, is it cos she only just started her training and needs to build up her strenth to get an apitite to cast or is there a problem, never had this before? Parabuteos lad 878
is the bird plucking the docs prior to eating them? Quote Link to post
jasper65 6
some birds will pass alot of chick fluff through their mutes, its not the perfect roughage for casting paterial such as feather or fur. It might be a good idea to skin the chicks and stay away from any casting for a day or so and see if she then casts up. she could be just slow casting because she is is down in condition? I have had birds go over 24hrs in the past before they cast so hopefully Mal it will al be ok mate .... Quote Link to post
mal mason 7
yeh went out around 9pm and she still never cast so thats 35 hours or so, i mean i have noticed her plucking but yesterday morning she had four doc from the fist and she ate everything so should have a decent cast? so if she dont cast by tomorrow morning do i feed her or do i not thats a long time how long can i wait, i have never witnessed this before, cheers guys Quote Link to post
mal mason 7
still not cast this morning thats two days?? Quote Link to post
jasper65 6
Mal! if she is well above her flying condition then a day or so without food wouldn't hurt, as you know a bird fresh out of the aviary will go a few days without food before it feeds off the fist... Must say it sounds strange unless she is plucking or flicking the casting and you havn't found them? if she needs feeding feed her enough to hold her at least steady on her 24Hr cycle with no castings. see how she goes but if she seems poorly get her up the vets......... Shamo 319
Hi Mal, There wouldn't be a great deal of cast in four DOC's anyway, but there would be some. It can come out quite wet at times and get mixed up with mute. Give her a bit of Rangle and something with a lot of cast material, Pheasant Head or something with a few small pebbles/Gravel in. That way you can see if she has definitely cast or not. Keep a check on her breath too, see if it starts to stink. Quote Link to post
Beastmaster1980 40
Mal, green mutes/slices are usually when the hawks digestive system is empty & living off it's fat reserve so if your dropping it's weight I wouldn't be too worried just don't let it go under. I prefer to give a small amount of rabbit meat when training & plenty of fur at end of session so they have a full crop & feel like they have had a good feed as not much nutrients in it & gets fat stripped off & crop cleaned out ready for hunting, chicks can be a bit slimy if feeding them I always de-yolk them. As said if it still doesn't cast check it's breath for foul smells & if it shows any signs of illness might be worth a trip to vets Quote Link to post
mal mason 7
the green mutes wasnt so much because she is light, there like very thick dark green, i have checked to see if anything in the crop area and tried showing her food but nothing just wanted to fly to me for the food, i spoken to the guy i got her from and as i thought like some people said she could have sent it out through mutes and he said if shes very keen to the fist and wanting to come right away and its two days after feeding doc try her as long as shes not showing signes of illness, she seemed great and very alert and keen to the fist this morning so i flew her on the creance and fed her each time she came and she was looking stronger in every flight, i have checked her all day and she is just sat on my lawn on the bow with her foot up looking very content and healthy, so will see if she casts in the morning if not she must be either very slow or shiting them out, i will try rabbit and a bit of pheasant in a couple of day, cheers guys Quote Link to post
mal mason 7
fhh doing fine after a long wait for the cast and deciding to carry on with her training she must have got rid some other way, any way training went well yesterday as after casting her into a tree i pulled a real bunny from cover and the difference was very very different, she came out of the tree like a bullet and struck the rabbit with intention very impressive so i let her fill her crop and we went home looks like shes not far off.........
