slip leads and collars

hi , just wondering what you lot use ?

 

i used to keep a collar on my pup untill a month or so back when she got hung up on the gate out the garden so since then i prefer not to put a collar on the dogs at all , i now alot prefer to run they dogs with no collar so what do you use to slip , ?

I like using a collar, only because there isnt another easy way to slip without a collar. I just use a leash (that should be used for falconry) but still does a good job as 1 end has a big knot that you can easily keep hold of then you just let go of the other end

i now the only ones i have seen with no collar is them ones with the triger clip that releases the collar 2 , not fussed on them so been thinking how i can knock sumit up

If you put the collar on tight enough you shouldnt have a problem with snagging up, ive never had a problem (touch wood) with getting tangled. Obviously not too tight though because they need alot of air

used to make slips out of a length of rope with a loop for your hand then half way down put a ring for holding keys through the rope, so all you have to do is put it round the dogs neck and thread the end through the ring, handy cheap leads for no collar

he made some i tried them for him but unless your dog is pulling all the time they slip off

Get a lenght (5 or 6 foot should be plenty) of 6mm soft cotton or poly three strand rope, not that crappy blue nylon stuff!!!, splice a loop in one end to fit over your wrist, then make a wooden peg about one inch thick and just a little longer than your palm is wide and that tapers off to a blunt rounded point and flat at the thick end and drill a 7mm hole through it from the flat end so that it comes out about about half way along the length of the peg.

 

Tie a knot in the rope tight to the spliced loop for your wrist to protect the splice then thread the peg onto the rope right upto the knot, then get a rabbit ring off a purse net and tie that onto the rope at about the height of your dogs neck and then splice a small loop thats just big enough to go over the wooden peg at the tag end.

 

Then when you want to put the lead on the dog just put the large loop over your wrist, loop the rope round the dogs neck run the small loop through the rabbit ring and slip it over the pointed end of the peg, when you want to slip the dog just let go of the peg, the weight of the dog pulls the small loop off the peg, it drops through the rabbit ring and the dog is loose.

 

If you want to keep the dog on the lead just push the small loop all the way over the peg to lock the lead off!.

Its a blooming good idea Chilly, my mate showed me how to make them a while back and I wont go back to using any other type of slip now, they are dead easy to use too and the wooden toggle/peg/handle gives you a good grip on the dog so no wrapping bits of twine ect round your hand, you can use em with gloves on and you can even take the dog for a walk on it if you want.

 

Trouble is I dont have a clue how to get any pics up.

No need for fancy leads or collars,an ordinary field slip is all you need,turn it round and put the end that normally goes on the dog round your wrist,have a look at the photo's on the next post as well
