Popular Post lksopener 105
After popular request from the section for a thread on where to get purse nets i have decided to put something together.Malt has agreed that this will also be pinned so any newbies can read it.First of all i might have a bit of a look into the purse net, its been reinvented more times than the wheel and has been made in a vast amount of materials over time but currently there are probably 3 most popular materials.HempOne of the oldest materials going for purse nets but please be careful with the quality of the twine there are a vast amount of different qualitys. If you are new to the sport you would probably be best to avoid hemp.In terms of caring for them they will last a lifetime provided you dry them out after you use them, if you don't have space to hang them after they have been out in wet conditions consider other options as they will rot if left wet. They are a good catcher though and very traditional these will be hand tied so you would expect to pay anywhere between £2-£3 per net depending on the length and supplier.NylonNylon is a superb material and probably the most common net on the market today. This will normally come in 3 variants:4Z - Normally mass manafactured by Bisley and the likes. Very good rabbit catcher if you work very clear ground like open grass sats and paddocks etc. The downside to 4Z is they are very difficult to untangle if you work sets that have lots of loose debris and if thats the case pick a stronger variant.6Z - These are produced by several people and found all over the internet. These are a little heavier than 4z and a nice compromise between using the heavier 10Z (Below) and the 4Z above. They are quite a nice all rounder and will work in most situations.10Z - The nylon nets i use are 10Z main reason being i am general working fairly heavy cover they are still light enough and a good strong rabbit catcher and they don't pick up quite as much debris as the 4Z and 6z.These should be available for between £1 - £1.50 a net again depending on supplier and length.Spun PolyesterSpun Polyester is a fantastic material when tied correctly. The Majority of my nets now are hand tied Spun Polyester. The benefits of Spun Polyester are that they are available in pretty much any colour you can imagine such as pink, lime green, yellow, red, blue etc! This is useful if your working permission where it may be easy to miss nets on picking up.They are a great catcher of rabbits and pick up very little debris so they are a good all round net taking into account any permission you may be working. Please be careful of the quality to make sure there are now slipping knots and they are tied very tightyly to the rings as i have had some shite ones in the past. If in doubt pay for 1 to check the quality most good netmakers will oblige. These should be between £2-£3 per net depending on length.Net LengthThe length of a net is again is a personal choice and will depend on the land that you are working. The most common lengths are:3ft: Great if you have lots of little pokey woodland and hedgerow holes and you know there is tight cover 3 footers will fit in nicely without catching up in too much undergrowth.3ft 6: These are possibly the most common length sold and if your just going for one length of net then these are probably the ones to go for, at home in woodlands, hedgerows or open cover.4ft: These are a longer net often good for well established rabbit burrows on softer types of land, aroud me sand is very prominent so some of the holes are huge and a large net is required just to cover the hole. The choice is personal but if you are starting out going for a mix of all three isn't a bad thing to do and will give you lots of choices when out, many netmakers will be happy to make them in varying lengths.Speciality NetsPoke nets are perhaps another variant. These are most simply put a purse net with a peg at either end. Useful for holes where when you peg on a net it may slide off or may need a little extra anchoring. These normally are slightly longer 4 or 5ft and help with bigger holes on steep banks or tricky to net areas.Pay around £2.50 - £4.Where to buy:I expect to miss or forget somehere so if you know of someone or a website please post the URL and ill add it in to this post.First thing to say is support your local lads, if the old boy round the corner makes them go and see him and have a look he probably has years of experience and you can see the quality. On the Hunting life:MY RECOMENDATIONS!Netrigger (Bill):This guy is fantastic and will make pretty much any hand made net you require. He will work in spun poly in a number of colours and provide all varying net styles. He also hand makes long, stop and gate nets. These are fantastic quality at the right money.3ft 6 +4ft nets plus lots of custom variants. alison391 0
I would just like to say what a great day me and my wife have had today. We visited Andy Kelly and his good lady Tonia, we have been looking at purchasing long nets but needed some advice on what we needed and how to use them. Andy and Tonia spent time advising us of the pros and cons of each different weight and size and we decided on 2 x 30yard nets. We visited to collect our nets this morning and they both spent time with us demonstrating how to put up and take down the long nets and the different ways to use them. We were welcomed into their home and we all spent a good afternoon talking ferreting. Andy showed us his selection of handmade purse and poke nets which are of excellent quality. We would definitely recommend Andy and Tonia to anyone in the market for nets. Thanks for all the help Ian & Alison Megson Edited October 14, 2012 by alison391 Quote Link to post
