Puppys First Season

Recommended Posts

I think my pup is coming into her first season at 7months, she has had my grandads JRT sniffing her constantly and getting abit excited, and now the whippet has started to get abit raging haha, anyway the whippets booked in for next tuesday, but in the mean time can anyone answer a few simple questions?

* How long does the season last for?

* How do you know when shes coming into season (ive guessed through the way the malesm act, but i cant see any blood etc)

* Can the dog still be walked the same distance when in season?

Few simple questions, any anwsers or Advice be brilliant

Happy Hunting

Paddy the season will last about 21 days , the first sign is usually the box will swell a bit , then you will get a bit of blood , the period between 10 and 15 days is usually the time when she will get caught , but it can happen earlier or later so be careful , as for walking / exercising be careful , it only takes a couple of minutes for some randy mongrel to get at her , make sure your garden is secure as well ,a horny dog attracted by the scent will manage to get in almost anywhere .

Alright thanks guys! The whippets booked in for tuesday! Seperated them at the moment! Garden I've been working on all week! Just a few more bits and bobs to finish! Will she put weight on during this time (dosnt bother me just wondering)

And what can happen if a pup this young had puppies!

(*I am obviously just asking this as to know the health risks before anyone jumps on me like I'm going to ruin my dog and breed her, its a question purely out of intrest!)

Patrick I bought a big blue bitch about 10 years ago now, that had been lined before she was a year old, I got her after the litter was weaned and she was haemorrhaging like anything (weeing blood) after a few months of treatment she could finally run for me but she never realised her full potential. She shouldn't put any weight on during her heat

Stranger things have happened - you read it on here all the time.........'accidental matings' I believe people call them. Take no chances, any size or type of dog will climb over or dig under any fence to get her. Keep it in the house and even then, consider keeping it in a cage if there are other dogs in the house. If you take it out, keep it on a lead at all times. It is your dog and your responsibility to avoid 'accidental matings'.

My pup got caught out by next doors boxer! That would of been a tidy type of dog if I hadn't had her jabbed at the vets! I didn't think a boxer could climb over a 5 foot fence but saw him do it once I kicked him in the bollocks as he legged it back home. I on to building my kennel this weekend as she'll be due another season soon I guess? How frequent do they happen?

when your bitch is in heat its a good idea to lift her into the car and drive a good few miles from home before you walk her as if you start away from home she will only leave her scent everywhere and you,ll have every local dog sniffing around your door

Depends on the bitch itself mate, some come in every 6 months others might only come in once a year

Their usually quite regular with the seasons so you'll know roughly when she's due. Don't forget it's not just other dogs trying to get to her, it can also be her trying to get to them.... let her off the lead and she f*cks off over the hill and comes back happy 10 mins later!! Best to keep them on a lead when out and about.
