Why do dogs roll in excrement?

Recommended Posts

After watching the comedy gold that was my mate trying his best to bath a lab that did not want to be bathed i ask you this, why is it dogs roll in poo? particulary fox poo?

Richard

dogs are stimulated by anything that gives them a charge, fox shite, dead prey, its a need to be in contact physically with the essence of the scent, a terrier guarding a shoe or sock in the house is the same thing, its not the object itself its the scent thats important to the dog, what im saying is the fact that the dog get covered in the shite is just a smelly consequence of the action to be in contact with the whatever its interested in , there is no thoughts of masking scent , dogs just aren't that switched on,

f**ked if i can figure out the thinking in a rabbiting dog covering himself in fox shite,,

I reckon that they just love the smell. I have dogs which roll in goose shit and no other sort, dogs which roll in fox shit only, and even one dirty b*gger which goes nuts on billy shit :bad: I really think that dogs are like us in that different dogs are attracted by different 'perfumes' and you only have to look at the pure ecstasy on their faces to know that they are getting a hit off their chosen 'perfume'. Similar to cats rolling around in cat nip.

I think dogs/wolves often roll in carcasses so they can let the rest of the pack know what they have found. A wolf can't tell the pack to follow, possibly also to do with the alpha not following a lower animal too but if they smell like meat they instantly let everyone know they have found food and of what type. Bit like a bee dance with smell in a small way. But the poo thing is stranger, I can only think it is to mask their smell in a way other things can't. I also thought most dogs only eat it if they are lacking something in their diet, so I don't think they would see it as a food source for the pack.

I always thought it was to give the carcass the smell of that individual dog/wolf to mark it as its own and that the act of rolling in shite was to cover the other animals scent marking it's territory I believe that it is just a instinct to mark the dogs territory just like dogs pissing on lamp posts etc

is it just dogs that roll in shit?i mean would a fox roll in dog shit lol

i dont see why a fox wouldn't roll in something that its senses are stimulated by, whether it would be stimulated by dog shit or not i dont know, its all based on the principle of attraction, and the need to make contact with it, either by ingestion or physical contact, the dog is completely oblivious to the fact he covered in shite because that was never the intention of the act,

good point mate.so is that like a human being drawn to certain smells.ie some like the smell of petrol not that i would want to roll about in petrol lol i always thought it was a trait from wolfs masking thier scent, but after reading this thread certainly opened my view.

its not so much the liking the smell as such its more the smell triggering something on a primitive level, its at the basis of our human and animal core , think more in terms of the smell of perfume (or stale beer) or the feel of fabric on the girl (or boy for some of the lads on here) with whom we had our first sexual experience, years later it can stimulate a charge, its that basic,it evokes a charge in us and draws us in,, likewise with the dog having no inhibitions he just acts on what stimulates him in that moment and that's physical contact,

its an instinctive thing they do to cover up there scent for going hunting so they can get closer to there prey without the prey animal smelling them

I dont buy it.........some of these pathetic little breeds of dog have virtually no natural doggie instinct whatsoever, only for the fact they still stand on 4 legs do we even still call them dogs........so to have some underlying instinctive behaviour like that i find hard to believe..........

I agree with what Kye says......its only seen as a dirty habit by us humans.....it would be like dogs trying to find reason why we humans drink tea......its only odd to a species that doesnt do it.

those breeds mate have the instinct knocked out of them, there crosses for show shite, through generations they have been manufactured for cash.the old breeds sheepdogs etc still have the drive and hunting instinct in them.why they roll in shite,f..k if i know ;)

I got this theory from watching 'Wolf man' or whatever it was when a man lived in a caravan next to a pack of wolves. It was a good programme, but he would drag a deer to make a trail then roll in it to get the scent. Then he would go back to the pack so they knew to follow the scent and what was at the end. He seemed to know what he was doing as he managed to live with them for years without getting attacked, but I am not 100% on this but it makes sense to me.
