skycat 6,174
"rash from the paw to the first knuckle on the back off each leg" What exactly do you mean by the first knuckle? And then you mention the hock area. Just trying to pin point exactly what area you are talking about: a photo might help. Do you mean up the back of the hind leg towards the hock? Dogs run in stubble on hard ground often graze the backs of their legs: a lot depends on the dog's running style: its action. Very fast dogs like Whippets who lay the lower part of the leg right down on the ground when pushing off are more prone to doing it than slower, more bounding styles of running: such as Salukis etc. There's not a lot you can do to toughen up the skin if the dog has thin skin: just avoid running it when the ground is hard. Bathing in salt water can help to dry up and heal the grazes. I wouldn't recommend bandaging the leg as it could cut off the circulation in the feet if the bandaging is tight enough to stay up on the leg: unless you use Elastoplast fabric: the real sticky stuff that comes in a roll: seen a couple of people use that: but you need to remove it straight after running: and don't use it direct on grazed skin. Wait until it has healed first.
