Had an hour out earlier with Old Real Tree.

I was coming home from work late today, about half seven, eight ish, the rain lashing down on the wind screan, and the wind blowing a gale in a cloudy sky, and just as i was thinking how much of a shame it was that i was heading home for an early night, with work tomorrow, i got a text from my buddy ORT, saying something along the lines "this weather is a lamping dogs dream".

Well, what more prompting do you need? So we aranged to have a very quick shine for an hour about half nine. ORT bringing his lamping bitch Milly, a class act and me bringing my ferreting partner Finn, just for the walk, and the off chance of giving him a bit of exercise.

Got to the farm and it was perfect weather wise, as we were heading up the track to the first fields ORT said, "i have a feeling tonights the night that Finn catches his first rabbit on the lamp", as he said it he flicked the lamp on and shone the field to our left, and sitting a fair way up, just the other side of the fence from us was a single bunny. Over the fence i went with finn in tow, hoping to get up to it squatting. As ORT flicked the beam back on, it was not to be, the rabbit was on the move fast toward the far hedge, but f**k it, i thought, Finn was pulling, and off he went, like a rocket. He turned it away from where it was heading, well, came streaming past me on it's tail and bang struck just as it got to the fence, nailing it first time. Job done. One very happy me, and one very proud whippet. He didn't bring it all the way back, prefering to have a little victory parade in front of the other dog. But it'll do for me.

Unfortunatly, just after this, the weather decided to change, the rain stopped, the wind went and the stars came out bright (we have some shitty luck weather wise, always seems to change as we start lamping). We persevered anyway, and moved into the next field, giving Milly a couple of (stupidly) long slips, of which she caught both, with real grace.

We walked the rest of the fields, with Milly managing another two rabbits, bringing the total for the night to five, and missing a couple that flew into ditches, knowing exactly where they were going.

I did give Finn, another very long slip, not ideal at all, but i was surprised he handled it well, getting up it's arse, turning it to the fence, but losing it through just as he was about to strike.

Right at the end, we sent Milly onto a very distant rabbit, lost her out of the beam for a moment, and then spotted her running for the hedge, as 'she' hit the fence and bounced back a foot, we realised it was infact old reynard, who had jumped out of a ditch, but unfortunatly he was under the fence and away before we could get a shot off (b*****d). Lucky reynard, had we entered the field through the other gate, he would have been getting up in front of us.

Done and dusted by half ten / quarter to eleven. A short night, and very few rabbits out, but enjoyable as always.

For some reason there is no photo of milly this time, we were too busy chatting.

Cheers guys!

Frankel - you wouldn't believe that he has had three proper trips to the vets in the last few months to be put back together.

Including this -

WHich resulted from a high speed collision with a piece of metal sheeting. You could see bone, tendon, the lot, groin to ankle.

To be fair, when he did it, both myself, and the experianced dog man i was out with thought that was his running days over. It looked like he would lose the leg, but i rushed him into the vets and then nursed the wee b*****d back to health. He breaks easy, but he's surprisingly tough.
