jigsaw 11,899
anyone here knows is there any way of encouraging a dog to hunt feathered game or is it a natural progression for them?I would like to have him trying out the birds if possible.I had a saluki cross years ago that was a self taught natural,is there anything I can do to direct him towards this area.Your thoughts and advice would be much appreciated,JIGSAW Quote Link to post
Guest MOLLY
Pheasant, partrige etc will tend to take flight right infront of your dog, at these times id just encourage it, infact i used to. Its a wonderfull sight seeing your lurcher leaping into the air and catching them but imo Jigsaw i'd tend to discourage a dog from doing it, especially if you want permission on any estates which have shooting. Its a trait i wish i had'nt encouraged and am trying now to reverse. No gamekeeper will love you when he see's your dog running back with one of his precious birds flapping in your lurchers mouth MOLL. Quote Link to post
jigsaw 11,899
Molly i'm ok in that department, the only estates im on are council estates and you'd get plenty of hassle there anyhow, i'm all for it but dont know if theres a way of getting him tuned into it.Where I live moll we dont have estates for shooting. Its rough ground I work and a few phessies scattered round here and there, shame not to avail of the available food source, anyone got a thought on this matter, please. pilgrim1982 0
I've got two whippets and they seem to love their birds. One caught a dove after chasing it into the fence. Funny enough that was his first kill. I used to have free range chickens (red indian jungle fowl aka wild chickens) but the whippets kept catching them so i had to get rid of them. By the time my whippet was around 4 or 5 months there wasn't really much i could do from stopping him catching them as he couldn't resist it when they run in front of him. He didn't kill any though, he would just catch them and hold them till i got them out of his mouth. I honestly don't think its possible to keep whippets with free range chickens. They also chase scrub turkeys but haven't caught any yet. Only a matter of time. Quote Link to post
juckler123 707
Best way ive found is get em out when the poults are in and around the pens i work mine to the catapult and air rifle as pups they soon get the idea theres also loads of partridge and woodcock where i lamp and find the pups set em at first when they do this i go to the opposite side of the dog the bird follows the lamp and as soon as its eyes are off the dog it will strike hope this helps Quote Link to post
Guest Tonedog
They also chase scrub turkeys but haven't caught any yet. Only a matter of time. Is this in australia? Yeah I've got heaps of them around here, reckon something like a whippet would be good for them. They need a bit of a run up before they can take off, they're reluctant to take flight, and not bad on their feet at zigging and zagging. No match for a whippet though obviously I imagine it is only a matter of time before they get one. No one should care too much either, they're in plague proportions. Quote Link to post
gaz 284
Have to break mine to feathered game as my permision has pheasent, partrige and grouse out on the high ground but im lucky to have the trust of a few keepers so the effort is worth it Quote Link to post

Its hard for the the whippets to chase them in the thick bush and they take flight quickly. If they caught one out in the open it would be easy for them. yes they are everywhere, they even live in the city now. They live in peoples backyards and rip up their gardens etc trying make nests. My cattle dog used to be fond of chasing them through the scrub when he was younger as well be never did manage to get one as he is quite solidly built and found it hard pushing through the thick bush.
