pats an jacks 1
right lads and lasses, this new pat pup I've got is 5 and half months old. Over the last month this dog has just turned into a true game little sod! Whilst out walking and moochin with other dogs he will be in cover, nose down hunting. I dont think he even hears me calling him. Today whilst out with me at work, he was in thick bramble cover for nearly two hours in hunt mode, when I mean thick cover, the spaniel I had with me couldn't even push through it. Anyway, my cup of tea was well and truly empty and I needed to get back to the clearance work I was doing in the adjacent field, but the little sod would not come out and was covering every inch of this ground! He wasnt lost because he popped his head out for a second, saw me and went straight back in! I dont want to be too hard on him and knock all the gameness out of him, but I also dont want a dog that lives on the lead. My russell was out as soon as I called him, so he's not learning off him. On open ground he comes to heel no bother, but once onto scent and in cover, I may as well be calling the nearest tree! I suppose you can't have best of both worlds; a game digging dog that only switches on when you want it to! Any thoughts? other than to live with it or just put a lead on everywhere. Rik 49
Ive got a Pat bitch when she was that age it was exactly the same, nose down and gone Iost her a couple of times, one time she was found 14 miles away I was very lucky to get her back I wont lie to you I used to give it a good ####ing and found it didnt make any difference the dog wouldn't come back for beating out of my frustration so did the opposite, the good girl reward approach It took a while but it worked she is now 16months old still gets her nose down and grafts but she will come now to my whistle, but if she see's quarry Ive got no chance,I get my fags out take a seat and wait,no point in shouting-whistling cos I know she will be back in 5/10mins My Pat dog comes 1st shout/whistle but the same as the bitch if he can see his quarry even on his lead he will drag me after it its only a pup mate like I was told just give it time it will happen YIS Rik Quote Link to post

Where i exercise my dogs is a big open bog for miles without any holes or pipes. I can let the terriers and lurcher run free without having to worry about any dog goin to ground. The only game there is about is hares and when 1 gets up in front of the dogs then they are all in on the hunt.I sit and wait and 1 by 1 they come back, apart from a pat bitch, she will eventually return but sometimes it could take half an hour, with her tounge hanging to the ground, needles to say if there were holes about they would be on leashes. sallie 67
I have a couple of my terriers that are obedience trained and they are brilliant most of the time but if they are in that mood you have no chance they take one look at you turn and run. Another one 18 months old i dont think you could ever trust her to come back off of the lead, Buster, scarlett and Ruby the pups im bringing on now, well Ruby always has cocked a deffin and think thats just the way she is, Scarlett at the moment always comes back, Buster will in the main come back, but if they pair up and run you have no chance. It doesnt help that where i live we are surrounded by badgers, fox, deer and rabbits,(Nature reserve) so life off of the lead is very difficult but in and out we take a chance. We pick our times. If they do run off when they come home they are always without fail praised and im delighted to see them so this has always brought them home eventually. Quote Link to post
