I personally would not Lamp with a young Dog, but what do you do if Rabbits and ferreting is your game? and you have a Pup say seven Months, do you load up the car with Ferts, nets and spade, and lea

there's some interesting topics on here search trigger2's he'll show you if done correctly it is ok, he's 7 month old caught 9 on lamp couple of days ago, apparently still got a 7 year old now still

its 1 of them you can say i only give it easy slips how do you know its going 2 be a easy run the rabbit could your dog on a couple minute run and even couple of mins 2 a dog that age could damage fit

ive seen dog fked off early starts and some great dogs of early starts just depends really

i started 1 off early at 6 month and the other when it had matured more , over a year old

had the same little problems with both of them like you usually get with dogs learning the game

both spot on now

but too much at a young age could ruin the dog , seen them end up yapping and other silly stuff

It all depends on the type of dog: a Whippet or Whippet type small lurcher will mature much earlier than a Bull/Grey. Think about it........... a big heavy built lurcher has so much more growing to do: no way is it ready for hard running at 6 months. Plus it has a great deal more weight pounding through each leg and feet. Growing bones and joints are easily damaged by too much hard running, and especially turning sharply on prey which twists and turns.

I've had 6 month old small lurchers out ferreting and catching, but I've also waited until nearly a year old with bigger, heavier lurchers. Bull'Greys are some of the heaviest type of lurcher: I'd just stick to walks, games etc for now, but if you do want to take her ferreting and she's mentally up for it, then make damn sure that all the holes are netted properly. Ferreting is great for pups as it teaches them to stick around you because that's where the fun is to be had, but she shouldn't be running stuff she has no hope of catching at the moment.
