bryson 562
i have a whippet grey hear and his speed at 7 months is unreal but do you think it will cause him problems when he goes in for the strike is there such thing as to much speed LMFAO !! A dog has to get up to it's Quarry, before it strikes !! A slow dog is just a mongrel cur ! Forget all this shit about dogs being "to fast" !! If they can't get up to it; they can't kill it !! Cheers. that wasnt my point mate its just hes seen a few daytime rabbits and he was on them like a shit fly but he seems to be finding it hard at the strike do you think this will come with age Quote Link to post

whip x grey 276
i have a whippet grey hear and his speed at 7 months is unreal but do you think it will cause him problems when he goes in for the strike is there such thing as to much speed there is always a thing off too much speed and not enough brains,,,,hence the lurcher i race mine mate at non ped clubs and derbys ,,,but when i aint doing that,,,i take mine out on early or late daytime mooch,,,,,i find when pups,,,DONT RUN THEM IN FLAT GRASS FEILDS lol as pups,,,but train them to long grass or cover 1st,,,,so they learn to twist and turn and out fox there prey,,,,ie,,,they quickly learn they dont have to run 40mph to catch a 25mph rabbit what i will say,,,in general ,,dont let a young whip/grey run in woodland ,,,unless there wise to it good luck,,,7month still a baby,,,at 14month ull hopfully see a bigger diffrence,,,,good luck ,,,just enjoy yer pup and keep abc training going,,atb Edited October 22, 2011 by whip x grey Quote Link to post

Romany 1,065
for rabbits ferreting/lamping/mooching daytime seen good 1st cross collie/greys, beddy greys, beardy greys, whippet greys.seen pre ban beddy greys take odd hares plus whippet/greys and beardy /greys take hares.saw a fantastic 1st cross deerhound /grey from nuttalls kennels in the late 80s take hares regular on big fields the few times i saw her run,but not seen this type for many many years. didnt know nuttal kept deerhound lurchers back in the day? intresting not craig n his name was brian nuttal i think from lancashire. i think romany knows what deerhounds he had in his kennels. Nuttals first crossers where supposidly bred from Enterkine stock, a cracking kennel.. 1 Quote Link to post

Guest born to run1083
As said what's the best first cross for all leagal lurcher work today a whippet x greyhound is best 1st cross,,,,as they giv ya speed ,, which isnt the end all ect ect but thats what you get from that 1st cross put a collie 1st cross,,,ull get the brains ,,,but what if it doesnt throw towards the racing lines,,,its 1st cross might fall short in speed if thrown more towards collie ( iam not saying collie slow by all means ,,,but a pure collie will fail when speed required, ect ect) the bull x grey,,,,is as we know hit or miss,,,,same as a beddie whippet,,,,,were golf course rabbit ,,,will rrun away from daytime end off day sulkie /greys will do it daytime and night as for the dog world,,,,the lamping fecked it up for a lot off breeds that can do it daytime,,,but end off the day could easly do it on the lamp,,,,,,but when it came to lamp ,,,u dont need the running dog as much Hi mate, I was at Westerhope Whippets this morning, and there was five of the "Nikki Whizz" litter there. Only one of them time trialed, and it lifted the field by one yard !! Every one of them looked like they would give a hare a good test !! A Whippet/Grey won't let anyone down if brought up and entered correctly ! Cheers. I bet a whip/grey would let alot of people down even if brought up and entered correctly no breed has that gurrantee not to fail, I know for sure I would break a whip/grey in half where I work my dogs alot locally. It's tough on my collie first x but she's as robust as they come. with whip/greys you need a fast dog to run slow and that's hard to find in a whip/grey. Love to see a straight x run up here on the quarries Quote Link to post
whin 463
whippet greyhound nice dog but not good on rough land and if asked to run to much not as hardy as a good beardie cross and saluk cross , god for breeding good lurchers but not the foll package ,dont let anybody full you speed catches bbig bags of gam eit helps but a good hunting guy with a grerater knowledge will cacth alot more with a good saluk cross collie cross than any whippet grew season after season 3 Quote Link to post

widowmaker 13
A lot of people are missing the point here ! The lad asked what would be the best 1st cross for all LEGAL quarry; as that would be rabbits and rats, I suppose a beddy/whippet would fit the bill ! Cheers. few hard runs on big fields and they where finished Quote Link to post
