J Darcy 5,871
The woods are still fully leafed and its hard work trying to hunt under the foliage. Christ, it should be dying off by now! Still, no point in moaning, best to charge the gun and hit the woods.I planned on a quick jaunt, under an hour kind of thing and for 55 minutes i wandered willy nilly without getting a shot off. A handful of squirrels were seen but they soon outwitted and eluded me, either dashing into the very tops of the trees or racing away across the tree tops. Our little walk had taken us a circular route and now we were within 1/4 mile of the car when the dog started marking a tree. He knows the score and i knew just what critter this was. Thankfully, the dog went around the otherside of the tree and a silver bushy-tail came to my side to recieve a Bisley LRG in the upper chest, dropping him to be delivered back to hand. Well, at least we weren't going home empty handed. Less than 150 yards later i spotted the stationary form of nutkins sat upright pretending he didnt exist. Well, at a good thirty yards plus this was going to be a nice shot if i could pull it off. Freehand i held slightly on the high side, allowing for a small drop. Thwack! and suddenly the squirrel in my bag wasn't lonely no more. Unbelievably another hundred yards and i spotted another squirrel sat upright, watching me, but not moving at all. This individual recieved a lead pellet and performed a magnificent kamikazie dive into a thick ivy-covered oak. But the dog was soon marking him strongly and another quick shot and he was down. Time to go home for a cup of tea methinks! Just when you get sick of waiting for squirrels three come along at once. Quote Link to post

Born Hunter 17,832
Lovely photo JD. It would be nice to have a decent squirrel permission for the air rifle but for the times I have to control squirrels unfortunately it's just so much more practical to use a 12 bore or .410 and a couple of dogs. Do you still have that beautifull custom 77? That guns a shooting mans wet dream! Quote Link to post

Yes, i think the tally was more down to luck than good judgement to be perfectly honest! I;'m quite happy with the 7D camera, took some quite nice stag pics with it last week and they look ok too. TBH a posed shot of a couple of squigs and a gun isn't very hard....Lamping pics - now THEY are hard. Happy Shooting....JD Quote Link to post

Nice to hear someone admit that a Squizzer can extract the yellow liquid from an experianced shot Regarding the image though, a posed shot can be pretty hard to get right compositionally JD; especially when the bulk of the image is dark 'Earthy' colours with the contrast of the TreeRats bellies and the stock of the gun. I also like the way you have shot so the barrel and silencer are contrasted against the lighter limb of the tree. Nice shooting both with gun and camera. Tony Quote Link to post
