Westy76 546
hi im looking to get started in keeping and working ferrets as some of the permissions im going for are a bit iffy with shooting due to the close proximity of public footpaths. Im looking to start from scratch and have got a hutch to start with so im looking for advise to get going ie how many to start with(smallish burys),hobs or jills, how old should i look to get them, any advise on feeding, what other equipment to get and what nets/how many?. thanks in advance for help given Quote Link to post
muddy210 34
hi mate first thing to do i would suggest is to find somebody that would possibly take you out before you buy some ferts you never know you might hate it then you will have wasted time and money and have ferrets that you dont want. but first off you will obv need some ferrets if your dead set on doing it i would advise as young as poss and from good working stock hobs and jills will all work but there is a big pref for jills if your gonna go for both make sure you know when to seperate them. next something to carry them in search ferret box on here for an idea next some nets spend what you can afford here stay away from cheap nylon nets to start with best in my opinion is spun poly easy to use and dont rot. 30 to start ferret finder plus collar per ferret downtoearth spade to dig if required a bag to carry all of the above other things that help are secerteurs slash hook a probe a flask a knife and i am sure there is loads that i have missed but most of all you will need some patience coz theres a lot to learn as most of still are all the best muddy 1 Quote Link to post

Jills and hobs both come in season and can both play up work wise when their mind is on other things, i've seen a couple of people keep neutered hobs for working through the summer. Ideation 8,216
The number of nets you will need, will depend on what kind of warrens you will face, in many places, 20/30 nets will be plenty, in others you will need more. I find that the bigger nets are not always best, in open land, as said, they will catch well, but in tight spaces, hedges, cover etc, they have more slack and so purse a bit slower. I like to keep a range of purse nets of different weights, sizes etc in my bag, a long with a couple of poke nets and a stop net. It's handy having different tools for different jobs Quote Link to post
Mick C. 229
larger nets can be a pain to set correctley in tight spots a brambles Also they are more prone to snagging when pursing. Depends on the job in hand really Quote Link to post
muddy210 34
nets are all ways a personal thing as to size and type but a good mix of sizes as ideation says is your best bet. jills are usually used due to their size but hobs are now been seen more and more in the field i use both and have no issues with either hob i have is a big fella and use him whenthe jills are getting a bit of a kicking or the conies wont move. used to have a hob that would kill down then try to drag them out different ferrets for different jobs Quote Link to post
Rake aboot 4,935
First things first ! WELL DONE for taking the time to find out about the sport before diving in and getting ferrets,, so many jump in without a clue,,, so cudos mate,, TBH.. you would do well to start small.. if you want a ferret,, get two ! lol,, they are social wee buggers so need company,, two wee jills are easy. That and a handfull of nets is the bare minimum required,, Through time,, you will have to think about loctaors,, dealing with Jills in season, etc ,, but these are not rocket science problems and are easily dealt with,, ferrets and nets will do,, and will catch rabbits,, read the reports on here,, and ASK QUESTIONS !!! you will find a wealth of knowledge,, Good luck and ATB Oh,, and buy a spade Quote Link to post
