clifford 11 0
With one of these birds would you say is a all round better hawk Red tail or haris hawk. For hunting birds and rabbits. I am not asking which hawk to buy as iam not buying one at this time. Just asking which one would you go for and why. Quote Link to post
jonesey 2
id say harris both birds will take game and the red tail is probably physically the strongest bird and if you want to take bigger quarry such as hare and even fox with a big female id say redtail. but seems as thought it sounds like birds and rabbits are your quarry id say a harris. bit quicker off the mark and i believe a bit more talented and seem to be easier to get into peak condition but if you have time to work a red tail and get it fit theres no reason they cant take rabbit and the occasional game bird but the harris will probably find pheasants and the like slighty easier due to their quicker turning and straight line speed although will still find pheasant and the like challenging. atb Quote Link to post
ulverston moocher 60
I personaly lean more towards the harris hawk as they are a bit more placid and not as highly strung and if entered right they are pretty much bullet proof but the red tails will take and hold down bigger prey so it is just personal preference realy Quote Link to post
clifford 11 0
I would have to agree with the hh. just the screaming i would have to try and stop Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
Niether are any good on feather apart from moorhen's in flight but im sure folk will doubt this with a bird that mug's tightly seated game.. Never flown a red tail but i have good info on them..been out with one several times a male never seen him cacth much ..i have had and been out hunting with several harris's and they are good on bunnies but that is about it..unless like is say you are trying to mug tightly squating game bird's.. From my experiences i can not give you a answer on which is best..but i can say both will catch rabbit's. Quote Link to post

craigyboy 1,274
ive owned both and i can honestly say my male redtail was by far the better bird for variety and excitement,it was awesome at catching squirrels,it used to corkscrew the tree til it nailed it,he even used to pull the dray apart if ever they went in,which subsequently meant they'd come back out and then you could come out the woods and slip him on a hare or rabbit,he caught the odd waggyhen, pheasant and mallard but birds wern't his forte,i once slipped my female redtail on a hare and she spotted a fox before i could blink she was on it pulling great chunks of fur out ,as i started legging it she must of let go and the fox fecked off,she was as tame as a robin at home but as soon as she was taken out hunting she turned into a fecking banshee 2 Quote Link to post
jasper65 6
You Can't fault them for gameness Craigy, them females have some awsome power in their feet Must say I rate the Redtails and would take one of these over a Harris if I had the choice. My old male would crash into cover like he was on a suicide mission, he also took on some ridiculouse long slips when he was fit ...... Quote Link to post
