declining brown hare

Recommended Posts

I've said it earlier, but the fact which some people don't seem to realise is that for the last 20 years, NATIONALLY. the Brown Hare population has been steadily increasing.

Anyone that is talking of a decline, can only be meaning locally, and the reasons they're giving may be true.

During my lifetime there's been a big increase in the areas I'm familiar with, and by what some others write on here that's the same in other areas too.

According to the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (and other conservation organisations), the big decline in Brown Hare numbers started in the late 1950's early 60's, due mostly to the reduction

the big hare drives and shoots on estates doesnt help when they are shot in theyre hundreds.

overshooting, changing farming practice, increases in fox, badger and buzzard and too many lads running them, game dealers paying £5 a head for them, what the hell is in their favour.

Theres alot of ignorant people commenting on this thread. Not to mention shit stirers hitting an easy target, now wheres the sport in that? lol.

Life aint black and white folks, stop being so f*****g niave.

Ignorance can be borne from many things, most usually a lack of experience in a subject :duh: .

The real problems start when people believe all they read/hear.

Ive only had dogs for 40 years, keepers in the family and shooters in the family going back to my great grandad, maybe i should have taken more notice and i wouldnt be so ignorant on the subject,ah well

Round here mate theyve decimated everything in the lamp with rifles,i hear the same story from mates in different areas, skill? Yea im anti shooting, ive stated why and its the truth, sometimes the truth hurts.

I dont own a dog capable of coursing a good hare, but its a bad do when you cant find one on a 4 hour walk with 3 spaniels,a couple of weeks before that walk last year as the crops were being cut i counted 16 in a couple of hours mooching about,2 weeks later nothing.

And we all know theres idiots on both sides of the fence, difference is i dont try and defend the defenceless.

Fancy coming on a Buzzard cull?

I wasn't meaning you were ignorant mate, I was generalising. It's the same with everything, one person hears about a few hares/Foxes/Deer in an area being shot or lamped with Lurchers, and suddenly it escalates into extermination on a national level.

I agree fully about there being idiots on both sides. But I totally disagree with anyone that states this thing is the same nationally. As I've said, the reason for any shortage of hares in one locality, real or borne of prejudice, can't be the same nationally, as this countrys Hare population has been increasing since the mid 1980's.
