I call bullshIt. 1 sheep weighs a tonne more than 3 hares. Hares refect, sheep dont, compared to how much crop is lost to disease, other pests, poor farming etc - the hares have a neglible effect on crops in most areas. Even in forestry if the trees are properly sleeved then they are not to blame. I tend to agree the act of grazing a crop used to be a way of helping the wheat tiller properly folks used to put sheep onto a growing crop to do this so a few hares on a crop shouldnt' be a bad thing especially as unlike rabbits the damage wouldn't be localised Quote Link to post

I was only saying I was suprised it hadn't been mentioned as a reason for some farmers wanting them controlled. I've known farmers who wouldn't tolerate more than a few on their land, and others who didn't mind how many there were. On the other hand, the Sheep round your way must be big f**kers to weigh over 1000kg! Quote Link to post

The sheep round my way are massive breed average for cotswolds are around 150kg for a ram. Brown hare average weight: 3kg. So I might have been exagerating a bit but you get my point. robwelsh 354 Posted October 19, 2011 Report Share Posted October 19, 2011 theres only one thing thats f*****g the hare population up and thats the same thing thats f*****g the deer and fox population up, GUNS. i remember when the ban came in and hunting with dogs changed to rats and rabbits the local butchers and game dealers had more head shot hares in them than i can ever remember seeing. According to the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (and other conservation organisations), the big decline in Brown Hare numbers started in the late 1950's early 60's, due mostly to the reduction in agricultural diversity through intensified farming methods. Nationally, Brown Hare have been increasing since the 1980's and the introduction of agri-environment schemes (the increase has continued since the ban). This trend applies to Roe too. So overall, neither the Hare or Deer populations of the UK can be said to be f***ed up by GUNS, so please can we all stop blaming each other. Did the farmers get paid for coursing on there ground before the ban came in? If they did i never knew that. I dont actaully have running dogs myself mate but i really like it and have friends that do it. I dont have the land to warrant having a dog....maybe someday... Im positive that landowners and their tennant farmers never got paid for a days coursing (under rules) they would get an invite to the Landowners Dinner by way of a Thank You,and nearly all the landowners would be on the coursing clubs committee Y.I.S Leeview Quote Link to post

Yeh, I did realise that mate. My point in all this is that nationally, Hare numbers have been slowly increasing over the last 2 decades. And it gets my back up when people are just too quick to blame other branches of fieldsports for an alleged decline of any animal.
