Night on the North York Moors

Recommended Posts

Well conditions were good, as i made my way up to my land, i had with my young saluki cross, I was hoping to give her a good little work out, as she needs brings on to get her fully fit.

Arrived just after 8 and after a short talk with the farmer, off i set. First field full off long ears nine in total, wasnt going to touch these tonight but couldnt help my self, so i picked one out, and with one shot and a good retrieve, the bag had its first victim,

A short walk through a boundary wood brings me on to a stone dry wall running between the moorland and grass fields with limited numbers in the field but the moorland lifting with rabbits its obvious i'm out an hour to early, but tonight isnt about numbers. just want to give the dog a few runs.

First rabbit is soon fleeing towards the wall two turns at the wall and its in the bag. Fifty yards furthers on and an almost identical run and number two is in the bag.

We move on a couple of field to avoid the herd of young cattle that are bouncing all arounds us lol.

The next field had been heavily snared, and rabbits werent keen on going through the wire, which made for two striaght forward takes, four rabbits in the bags.

Stopped to give the dog a little time to catch her breath, to realise i'd only been out for little over twenty minutes.

Flicked the lamp back on, to see a rabbit a long slip off at the bottom steep slope, the dogs keen to go, so i let her off more in hope then expectation. she gets on terms well and soon boxes the rabbit out in the field for another fine take, and thats five from five.

On to some winter barley next, now this is a different kettle of fish, rabbits wasting no time getting through the open fences to safety. She misses the first taken back by the turn of speed and the non-pausing at the fences. But she does well to take the next two in quick succession.

Well at this point i decide to call it a night with seven rabbits and a hare in the bag in just under an hour, the dogs had a good little work out and done me proud. Hopeful this wind will keep up and i'll be back at it at the end of the week.
