lets have the truth how long have you been into runing dogs

Started off with an air gun at 11. Then came a few ferrets the same year and while I wanted a lurcher my parents wouldn't let me get one. We ended up with a pet mongral who was 1/2 border collie 1/4 lab and 1/4 complete heinz 57!

I started taking her ferreting with me and she turned into a fantastic ferreting dog. Not fast enough to catch a rabbit on the run, but marked as good as any dog i have seen and pined the netted rabbits.

At 17 my parents finally let me get a lurcher. I had her for a few months when she got hit by a car and had to be PTS.

Was given a Lucus terrier at 18 and worled her soly on rabbits and she was a decent rabbiting dog. When I moved out at 21 my parnets were so attached to her I didn't have the heart to take her away, so she stayed, and still lives with them. My dad still takes her out with the gun and does a fair bit of ferreting with her.

Got my second lurcher at 21 and had her until last week. She was a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 border collie and was a excellant lurcher. Very obediant and whilest she didn't catch hundreds she caught a few and provided me with sport and to me that's what it's all about. Sport not numbers. She hit a fence post and damaged her insides. She was nearly dead by the time I got to the vets and the vet Put her to sleep. I was, and still am gutted. The hardest part was having to tell my wife and wee girl.

I also got a plummer terrier when I got my lurcher and she was mainly worked on rabbit, with the odd days ratting. However she got a tumor at 21/2 and had to be PTS.

I now have an 81/2 week old whippet bitch and hope to get her started next year. The summer will be spent on obediance training and stock breaking.

I am certianly no expert but I do not claim to be. I hunt puerly for sport and I still hunt exactly the same as I did before the ban and will continue to hunt in the future. Hopefully my whippet will see plenty of Rabbits and hares in her lifetime and as long as she gives me a good days sport then thats all I ask of her.

my great grandad kept, bred & trained racing greyhounds, as did my grandad. my mum used to spend most saturdays when she was tiny in the back of an old van, curled up asleep with the dogs. my dad started keeping lurchers when he married her in the 70's.

my first lurcher was a stunning black saluki x grey called Black Jack Davy, he was bought for me when i was a year and a half old, to keep me company after my brother was born. he was more my dads dog really, as i was so tiny. my next lurcher was one we bred from Jacko & my mums beddy/whippet x grey. i've had several lurchers since, all descended from Jacko. i didn't really work them when i was a kid, but i spent a lot of time out with dad on his permissions exercising the dogs & catching the odd rabbit. i really spent more time with my little jack russel bitch, training & showing her. (still love the little things, contemplating getting another, but i WILL NOT have a working terrier with an undocked tail, and that's gonna be a bit of a problem soon!). working dogs really went out of the window when i was about 12, and music became my life.

had a couple of years off lurchers after my brindle bitch died, then when i got my own place i bought my saluki x grey dog Gyp as a 7 month old pup, and i've been working him since he turned a year. (not as much as i'd like, but that's shitty work hours for you!).

i guess you could say running dogs are in my blood!
