Which size Air Arms pellets

Recommended Posts

Just a quick question realy people iv just brought an Air Arms S410 in 1.77. Its not a fan of RWS Super H point and the lad i got it from says Accupel arnt any good through it. I think the best bet will be Air Arms own brand but they have two different sizes (4.51 and 4.52) which ones best for the S410?

Hi Sam,

AA Field pellets come in three sizes. 4.50, 4.51, and 4.52

Each rifle will perform at its best with a certain pellet, however its usually trial and error to find which one suits it best.

My S200 AA likes all the AAF's sizes but performes best with the 5.52 (mines a .22)

Best bet is to buy a tin of whichever you want to try. Set up the scope for your own eye and then Zero it. Once done a clean target and aim at the same spot on the new target and fire a 5shot string and see how wide the spread of the shot it. If you can get them within the size of a 10 pence piece at 30 or 35 yards you will be able to try them out on quarry.

Next time you go to buy another tin, try a different size and carry out the same grouping test. Compare the results, which ever size produces the smallest group will be the best for your gun.

Later on you can try a different brand using the same test.

Hi Sam.

Lothar Walther barrel .177 think I would try 4.51 first

Hi Bill just curious why you would try the .51's first due to the barrel being a Walther? Do Walther barrels in general prefer a medium weight pellet?

Hi Andy.

just going on my personal results and trials with my AA S200 .177

It too had a LW Barrel which is choked the same as the 410.

I tried Bisley magnums in her first 4.50s but found I could not achieve tight groups, the barrel just didnt like them at all,( right or wrong ) I put this down to the pellet being to hard, and not beniffiting from the constriction and sizing that the choke provides.

Felt they would be ok for close range work, i.e ratting but not for general hunting.

I then tried AA Diablo Fields 4.52s, the groups were tighter but I felt they could be improved, so I then tried 4.51s and BINGO clover leaf at 40yds not a problem at all.

I can only speak of what I found with my rifle, I know barrels can be fussy, but on the trials I did, I have no problem suggesting the 4.51s.

As regards to pellet wieght, in my humble oppinion, yes a medium weight pellet would be my preference, and a soft make up too.

Hard and heavy pellets I found grouped poorly, dropped off, and I thought because they are hard, they would over penetrate and offer little kenetic energy at the target.

These are just my oppinions and findings, Im not saying for one minute that this is a deffinative answer, but what I will say is, it worked for me. :victory::thumbs:
