chr1sM 0
Hi all, I'm still new here so apologises if it's a newbie sounding post but it has taken me a whole day to fit my cabinet haha! The trouble began when I got permission to fir the unit but as I dont own the house I had to put it where ever the owners deemed suitable(for when I left re-sale would be easier) so after a lot of messing around the cupboard under the stairs and office walls were thrown out and I had to fit it in the garage.... Not too much of an issue I though as its well built and no damp etc. So after purchasing a lovely 7 slot buffalo and some 4" wind in screws I cleared the garage to start fitting it in, Problem 1. The wall I was told to fit it to was only single row of normal house bricks so the bolts would come out the other side if it was even a few mm over shot. So I called the owner and asked if I could put it ont he adjacent wall, sure no problem probably better there he said. Great I thought so I again cleared the garage to get to the other side to find out the storage cabinet that was previously fitted over head was 3mm too low, So I had to take it off and move it up10mm(just to make sure) which then led me into another issue problem 2. ..... There were some water pipes running along the floor about 3 or 4 inches off the ground and 1 inch off the wall.... by this point I was feeling rather annoyed with the whole job but persisted! I rang my local fire arms dept and asked the question... If I put something behind the cabinet thats fixed to the wall and then bolt through both would that be exceptable? sure they said can't see why it wouldn't be ok... Brilliant straight back out to crack on with the fitting. Which leads in problem No.3 the raw bolts were then too short as when I finally lined all the holes up and put the first bolt in it pulled half the brick out.. ********** lots of little verbal stars at this point.... ok I thought, will move it a few inches to the left and try again, I must have used the wrong drill bit or been a bit shakey and lined it up wrong, WHACK... another one pulled out, SOD IT! I'm going to use some 12mm wall bolts and be done with it except they dont fit through the holes of the cabinet so I had to pre drill all the holes move it off, put the bolts in, move it back on again and finally YES IT WAS ON! So that was my day, everything is now back in the garage, the cabinet is bolted on nice and secure. but I definitely learned a few lessons and I think the main one is get someone else to do it next time haha. SportingShooter 0
Chris, When you mentioned to the Firearms Department about fitting the cabinet did you tell them you are fitting it inside a garage? Or are they aware that it was your intention? Only reason I ask is that they can be very fussy when it comes to cabinets being installed in outbuildings and not to an internal load bearing wall of a house. Quote Link to post
nasher1 258
As above the FAO really wont like it in the garage he will want it in the house Quote Link to post
nod 285
mine is fitted in the garage but its connected to the house and it has a door directly to the garage from the house, they said it was fine but they did ask Quote Link to post
PMC 2
I think that they are less bothered as long as the garage is integral/joined to the house. If it was a garage remote from the house, even by a few yards they really don't like it. If you've sought advice from the licensing department you'll be alright. P Quote Link to post
chr1sM 0
Yea the garage wall is the same wall that I would have fitted it too in under the stairs, just the other side I rang my local which is also the HQ for firearms in this area so should be fine, worst case senerio i'll have to move it which isn't the end of the world just very irritating! But either way I will let you all know the outcome and maybe take some photo's if its legal to do so? might be of help to others in this situation. The Duncan 802
I know of an rfd in Bucks who has his stock in a wooden shed, albeit with a security steel door. No alarms either! The mind does indeed boggle! D. Quote Link to post

The Duncan 802
A crowbar and pick up and you'd have lots of 'hot' firearms. Even the dog they have doesn't bark when you knock at the door! Quote Link to post
chr1sM 0
After spending a few hours walking around the tackle and gun show today I decided I couldn't take anymore and called the firearms dept again for clarification on the matter and this was what I was told, Provided its a load bearing wall and not at the bottom of the garden or and the end of the street, or visiable from the door leading to the street it will pass... this was only the opinion of the person at the other end of the phone and my not be the same view the FEO takes but I do feel happier now about its location once they have been out and give the nod I will let you all know Quote Link to post
