NEWKID 27,143
Had our first run out on some new permission today, I took the dogs up yesterday evening to have a look around and there were a few rabbits about , it's a big piece of land with arable fields and sheep fields, quite hilly the land goes up to a large wood, nice land. I had brought my Jack Russell and my young Whip Bed ( Martha), Micky had brought his terrier ( top marking dog) and his lurcher. Decided to ferret a long hedge row between 2 arable fields after the terriers showed interest , we decided to use 4, 10 yard stop nets a side coming out from the hedge at around 20 yrd apart and purse net the runs and the holes we could get at in the hedge. We decided to tether the terriers today when the ferrets were working and position my young lurcher one side and Micks the other. We had 7 ferrets between us and put 4 in straight oiff within 5 mins the tale tale banging started and bang rabbit hits the net on Micks side then another, It was one of those days when all the action was on 1 side and it wasn't mine after a bout an hour 1 hit the net on my side the little lurcher held it till I got there she's getting better and better round the ferrets. We ha 1 small dig to a rabbit but other than that all good bolts. We had moved the stop nets a couple of time down the hedge when a rabbit bolted where the nets had been Martha was straight on it hurdling the 2 nets in her way and just missing at the hedge would have beena great catch but it's 1 for next time now. we had got to just over half way down the hedge and stoped for a cuppa with 11 in the bag. The hedge changed froim here with bits of wall and odd warrens along it, we let the terriers loose and they marked well on a bank with a load of hawthorn on it ( I got some nice sratches from that lot) we netted up and in no time number 12 was in the bag, then it went slow and there was no show from the 2 ferrets still in for a while, we located the ferret/s at around 2ft and out from the hedge easy we thought, this bit must the farmers route around the field and has been compacted for 100 years with farm machinery it was solid. As we were digging my young hob showed covered in blood so we caried on and dug to the jill still in, as we broke through we could find no sign stuck my arm in up to the pit but could not find ferret or rabbit then she popped out covered in blood too. It was one rabbit we couldn't find unfourtanetly. That had slowed us right up and it was around 2pm now so we wrapped up and took a walk around, to have a look at the place properly. The dogs marked a huge bury covered in brambles it 1 for later on when it dies back a bit. Every hedge showed good signs I'm looking forward to getting stuck into this lot. It was a good day and the dogs and ferrets done well 12 in the bag and could've been a few more looking forward to getting up there again. Sorry theres no photos I normally use my phone bu I smashed it up gonna get a decent camera soon. Quote Link to post

Going for a walk on another new bit in Cullompton this week, been told there's a fair few rabbits on it we could sort a day up there as well. Have you been out lately? Quote Link to post
seanc 201
Been out 4 times had a dozen twice then a good 26 and 11 this weekend. That was hard work still to much cover but farmer says he's going to cut for us and hopefully there's some good frosts on the way so that should strip it back as well. Well up for a day out mate will return the favour on some of my permission if your interested. Regards Sean Quote Link to post
