Favourite rabbiting dog / one for the pot dogs

Recommended Posts

I've got a 3/4 1/4 whip beddy and she's been easy to train, good round the ferrets, good nose and works around the edge of the bushes when the terriers in, her recalls good but her retrieve is hit and miss on the lamp and she never yaps which I've heard can be a problem.

Her Downside for me I wish she was a couple of inches taller, mainly for lamping it don't make much difference ferreting or bushing when she's on the rabbits instantly,I think she'll excell at ferreting and bushing but be a fun lamping dog rather than a top one.

My brothers got a first x beddy whip she's got a different temp altogether a lot more terrier like, she'll enter any cover no worries a bit too hectic around the ferrets yet but I think she'll settle in time, theres a lot of work to be done on her she's really driven and uses her nose a lot sh'e only 12 months and not really matured yet again never heard her yap.

Between the pair of them I think 1/4 beddys enough for me as I prefer her steadiness.

Good luick in your search mate.

Cheers, how tall did your bitch reach?

She's around 19 inches mate, the dogs in the litter went bigger up to around 22"

I, personaly, wouldn't go for a Beddy/Whippet, to small for my liking, although others swear by them !! I'd rather go for a Beddy/Grey or a Beddy/Whippet X Grey, just to put a bit of size in them ! Be

Good !! I said "usualy"; and said many would disagree. I have a 29" bitch that takes rabbits in the lamp, but I wouldn't advise the lad to get a Deer/Grey for what he wants...I only gave an opinion. A

a pup out of your nine year old

Finally the wife has given in to me, it took some some time, but now i have the go ahead to add another dog to the team. I mainly hunt rabbits in the day time, bushing with the two terriers to the lurcher. My lurcher (collie/greyhound) is now nine. I'm going to get a another one some time in 2012.

Most of my catches are in small fields so the dog needs to be quick with good strike for the rabbits and capable of an occasional longer course. It is also very important that it works hard to find its quarry (as there not much about) with good nose.

Im open to all lurchers, but ideally below 23 or below........So any pics or suggestions/ advice will be greatly recieved.

if its just rabbits,,,daytime walk up or ferrets,,,,a nice 19inch to 21inch dog will do,,,,weather it lurcher /sighthound or long dog,,,,,,daytime,,,needs a slight more turn off speed,,,than lamped rabbit,,,,whippet type are good choices as most will work with you , than aganist u,,,,on a whole,,,,,my mate works a whippet/grey/ collie,,,i have to say its good,,,,beddy /whip greys,,,seem the tool

when it comes to a good nose,,,its hit or miss with a longdog or sighthound i.e whippet or greyhound,,,they rely on there sight more which aint a bad thing, rather than missing what running about & having nose 100% to groud,,,,,hence the NAME --- sighthound,,,

i hear plls say,,,my whippet has a really good nose ----yes for a whippet ,,,not meaning the dog world,,,as they are certainly not in the top ten for nose,,,but does the job all the same

Cheers, i used to work a whippet years ago, a very keen little dog. I do like my dogs ideally below 23 inch, and think having some whippet in there is a good idea because most of the chases i get are over in secs. I have considered a whip/grey as when i first started working dogs the old blokes i used to go out with swore by them as daytime catch dogs, rating them over there little whippets.

if i ever pull away from the whip/greys,,,,which might be in a few years ,,,as there racing is a dying sport,,,,and i aint going into greyhounds lol,,,,greyhound TIP eden star ,,,27th october the greys a machine,,,dont say i aint kind guys,,,this grey might be the next ballyregon bob if he keeps winning the way he his lol good luck

i get offered loads off beddie crosses threw my whip/greys,,,,,if iam honest,,,i would choose 1/2 whip 1/4 grey 1/4 beddie cause size aint that important if just rabbits,,,if it did ,,beddie /grey or 1/4 beddie 1/4 whip 1/2 grey ,nothings that simple,,,longs dogs got fire ,,,,,another cross thats intrested me is collie /beddie whip/grey ,,see what future holds lol

eden star,,,has grapped alot off the hardblood racers atenttion,,,,my brother attenttion loved ninja jamie few years back,,,he made alot off money off him

i hope eden star does for you,,,won by 9 1/2 leanths last time i gave tip to work mates,,,,fingers crossed he does it again,,,,grayham pen is the hardblood racer thats brought him to everyones attention,,,hope he make a few quid for you ,,and his winning streak keeps going ,,,as xmas is just round the corner,,,this greyhound could be the peoples champ,,,as you see in films in tough time,s

Nice looking dog, unusual markings.

same markings as mine but mine has more white blended with the brown on the back legs, and her front legs and muzzle are White in stead of brown. think it's a collie thing lol

beddie whippet grey was the best ferreting dog ive had so far ,cracking nose, game as feck , hated dogs unless they were out working with him ,in fact he didnt like people that much! , great on rats lots of rats but squirrels turned him into a frensy {was air gunning then ] broke his back leg bad but came back just as strong [this was about 25 years ago ] but he did tear himself often dont think barbed wire fencing was his thing . i miss that old dog very much

i have a 2nd gen whip/ghound from workin stuff just a tad short of 29tts. if you can get him the runn, he puts its in the bag, he hunts like a hound, and he'l take all game. Im not sayin hes a world beater or better than the smaller dogs. just my opinion

I like Collie/Geyhounds im running a 1/4 Collie 3/4 Greyhound when they are crossed in this way suits me alot

I have only ever run 50/50 collie greyhounds, but i would def go down the 3/4 route. I know sizes vary, but what size do you reckon a bitch 3/4 grey 1/4 collie would be..... about 23 - 25ish?

cheers

as for racing whippet,,,,you bring them up as a racer ,they will race,,,,you bring them up as a rabbit dog ,then they will hunt,,,,,its one off the breeds that are very verstile,,,,,as there accentory and history IS rabbiting & racing ,,,thats what they do
