Nipped out this morning

Popped out this morning with the hope of bagging a few bunnies and didn't even see one!

Laid up in my usual position under the conifers, just as the sun was coming up the large beech tree 35 yards ago started to host its usual flock of rooks and jackdaws. I always tend to leave the rooks and mainly concentrate on the crows, magpies and pigeons. Whilst rooks can be quite destructive they do play an important part in keeping some of the leather jackets and other arable pests at bay so I always have preference for either the 'eaters' or song bird desroyers!

Anyway, 4 magpies joined the flock of rooks and jackdaws so I got a shot off at one of them. A perfect 35 yard heart shot, the bird just rolled off its pirch and landed with its head in the dirt without so much of a twitch. It should really have been a double bag because after the shot hit home all hell broke loose! They had no idea where it came from and stirred up a real racket. One of the earlier magpies landed on the same branch, clearly confused and wondering why its mate took a nose-dive so I lined up the shot and just as I squeezed the trigger it moved :icon_redface: and the pellet passed without causing any harm.

I waited a while after the second shot but it was enough to clear everything away so I decided to have a quick plink at 45 yards with the .22 HW100 instead. Might have a nip up again tonight, just before dark, to see whats going on with the rabbit situatuion.

Thanks chaps, nipped out last night and after spending 2 hours in the prone position (sore neck!) fully cammo'd up I only saw only two rabbits in the opposite field :boredom:. I don't have permission there and they were running quite fast down one side of the field. The weather was blue skies just before the sun was setting with the occassional, barely noticeable, breeze. I'm wondering if the conditions weren't right or whether my scent was blowing the wrong way, you couldn't really tell. All a bit strange to be honest.. It could actualy be that the opposite fields are more appealing, the grass does look better and I suppose the vege patches on this permission won't have their appeal in Autumn when not much is growing . I'm guessing.. Will keep plodding on and pop up next week, hopefully the winds will be that little bit stronger so I can properly guage the direction. Process of elimination I suppose.
