Guest bodgerbear
Well popped round a rescue centre with me old dear the other day and came across this little bitch. Shes 6 months and apparently shes a staffy x collie. Now I have had dogs in the past but never had a running dog. Im thinking I should just walk away and not bother but im a soft git and apparently no one has even bothered to look at her. The only thing I keep thinking is I dont know where she has come from/ what has happened to her/ what bloomin breed she is, also Ive never had a bitch before are they any different to a dog to train/work. I think it would be best to walk away but I thought I would ask and get some advice. ATB Rob Quote Link to post

44david44 43
staffy x collie dont think it will be much of a running dog mate. Quote Link to post
darbo 4,776
entirely your choice. if the time is put into her and you are a ferreting man. could make a marking dog net guarder. dogs from dubious backgrounds with the right owner putting the time in. can make useful marking dogs when ferreting. probably not fast enough to catch a rabbit on the run. but i have seen a few mongrels over the years that marked great and held rabbits in the nets. is this what you would want from the pup? Fabapocalypse 35
Mixed rescue centres (as in those that don't specialise in a particular breed or type) are often only able to guess at a dog's parentage - even if a bitch has pups in their care they can't often be definite about the sire. She looks quite "houndy" to me rather than collie - though the bully side is showing - with that blue colour, and also looks younger than six months, somehow, but maybe it's the angle of the photograph? She looks quite high on the leg so there could well be running dog in there. Rescue dogs can be very rewarding to work with, they don't all end up there because they're "rubbish". She's got a good eye. 1 Quote Link to post
pikesta 54
side view pic would be better.? Quote Link to post
B.P.R 2,798
like has been said, these centres cant be sure of the breeding of a dog. im far from an expert but i would have guessed she has some sort of sighthound in there somewhere? maybe a whippet or similar? id get the bitch, in my experience of dogs(no running dogs) bitches are easier to train than dogs and the saying 'bitches work for their master, dogs work for themselves' is true- in my opinion. at 6 months old she can be trained to do anything and will still be taking everything in. i got a lab x collie which came from a rescue centre and she has got to be the best dog ive ever owned. she cant catch a rabbit, wont mark holes and wont lamp but she will do literally everything else! its so rewarding rescuing a dog knowing that the dogs has got a better life with you and beieve me- they know theyre lucky. good luck and i really do hope you get the dog. whats the worst that can happen? might not turn out to be a rabbiting dog but i bet it will be your best mate for life oooh im a soft git 2 Quote Link to post

Guest bodgerbear
Hi all, Big thank you to all the replies so far. Sorry I should have been a bit clearer in what im after. I am really after a dog to help me with ferreting, dont mind if they cant run like the wind just someone to help me if im out on my own for a mooch, if they can mark and hold a rabbit in the net then thats all im after. Ive never had a dog for hunting (ferreting etc) but I have had dogs in the past and dont mind putting in the effort to train her . I really dont know whether to see if I can have her out in the training yard and see what shes like. Will definately have a good old think about this one. Stupidly I showed the missus the pic and she wants to go have a look. If I can get up I will take some more pics and a video. ATB Rob Quote Link to post
Fabapocalypse 35
Another look can't hurt; out of her pen you'll get more idea as to her temperament and attitude and be able to see how she moves and interacts with you. Sometimes, with rescue dogs, they choose you, rather than the other way around. If it's not to be you won't have lost anything. Quote Link to post
richie c 11
like the look of her, theres running dog in that. Quote Link to post
BenjaminCadd 109
Mate i would go for it, i was in the same position a Month ago as i put in a thread, i got my lurcher from a dodgy car park in Birmingham as the woman giving her away didn’t want me to no her details, all i knew was it was a lurcher being kept in a flat, so i went, being soft as well and got her, full of fleas and very timid, no breeding lines, and the woman just guessed that she was terrier x whippet x grey but there is even saluki in there somewhere, but she’s back here now 12 weeks old and looking promising took her to watch the ferrets and she was marking holes, watching, listening and looking like she will be ok! Came back and now all she does is sleep with my wellies! Give it a try, it’s a risk and could turn out not to make the grade but deserves the chance! Good Luck. 2 Quote Link to post
blue staffy 145
that pup is the double for my pup and he is bull/grey x wheaton/grey , not saying thats her breeding but would defo say theres greyhound or whippet in her , give the pup a chance you never know until you try Quote Link to post

ATB Rob its up to yourself but if you take every dog you feel soft on then you end up with a load of dogs that you feel sorry for but it mite turn out the right dog for you only you can decide to take it or not Quote Link to post
Guest bodgerbear
Cheers again for the replies. Im gonna pop back up the centre on Monday and see if I can get her out for a bit. The only reason im considering this puppy is I am now in a postion to have a dog again (new house with garden). I do feel sorry for all the dogs in rescues (having owned a staffy before im horrified at the numbers in rescues) but I was going to buy a dog to train for ferreting and I thought she may be worth the risk. Will try and get some pics up on Monday all being well. Then descion time I think. Will keep you all updated ATB Rob Quote Link to post
