Dellboyzz 0
I have bought a new air rifle ( pre charged). I have put brand new sights on but when zeroing I get a grouping of about 5 pench at twenty yards. But then out of no where I get stray shots but high and wide and low and wide and so on by 50mm. Now it's like 3 out of 10 shots are off. Is it the air rifle ? Or is it just lining the barrel ? Cheers for reading any response great. Traff Quote Link to post
The Duncan 802
How many shots have you put through it? Also what is the rifle? Is there any play on the barrel? Is the scope secure? Sorry to answer a question with a load more! Duncan. Quote Link to post
Dellboyzz 0
Hey there it is a webly raider. The scope is secure and it has had about 120 pellets throw and the barrels seems secure. Thanks for reply. Traff Quote Link to post
markha 99
Make sure that you check every pellet to make sure that the skirt is not dented or squshed in any way, even if there is just a little flat bit on the pellet I throw it back, dented and malformed pellets are the number one reason for having what we all call 'flyers ( a pellet or bullet that flies off in a different direction). Dont worry about a cleaning regime or lead build up blah blah blah, I have an Airarms s410 and its had thousands of pellets through it and I have never ever cleaned the barrel at all, it still groups nice and tight and would be happy shooting bottle tops at 50m Some pellets are very soft and get damaged in the tin, we all get fed up with this as you might get bad pellets in 500 and they aint cheap! So check them to make sure they are all round and throw out the squashed ones If its still doing it then it could be your shooting style that needs a little bit of practice, have a read of posts on shooting technique by Zini and Pianoman or better still buy the new DVD from Zini as funds go to help our injured soldiers. All the best and hope its just squashed pellets. Quote Link to post
The Duncan 802
I too doubt its an overly dirty barrel. I do occasionally clean my hw100s barrel, about every 1000 shots or if the accuracy goes off. Then after cleaning the barrel, it takes about 10 shots to lead it back in enough to get accuracy back to perfection. I would recommend trying some different ammo and definitely inspect the pellets you are using for deformation etc as Markha suggested. Out of curiosity, what pellets are you using? Cheers D. Dellboyzz 0
Thanks for the reply. The pellets seem to be fine they are accupells and also had another air rifle to hand and check with that too. My shooting skills are fine but there is always room for improvement. Will be purchasing the DVD when is released. The trailer looks good. Thanks for the reply atb. Traff Quote Link to post
Dellboyzz 0
Also it is a brand new webley raider out of the box. So wanted to know how many shots it would take to lead the barrel but if only ten should be fine by now. Traff Quote Link to post
The Duncan 802
Accupells tend to be quite hard to damage as they are quite a short tailed pellet and robust. I reckon a JSB type pellet may be worth a go: JSB Exacts, AA Field, H & N FT Trophy's etc. I've had rifles that don't get on with a particular brand of pellet as badly as you described. Good luck mate, Duncan. Quote Link to post

Traff Yes, my HW100S only takes a few pellets (about 10 from memory), so with 120 put through it, I don't think this is causing your grouping issue. Cheers D. Quote Link to post
Dellboyzz 0
Will have a go with a few other brands to see out it goes. Thank you for your advice. ATB Trafford Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
A couple of things make a pellet shoot off in all directions never really consistant. Some have already be mentioned above. What i will say though is from first hand and from a very bad experience I had about 10 weeks ago with a brand new rifle (BSA SE, so a top rifle) It was doing the same thing as you discribe here. I though that because it was a new rifle it didnt really need its barrel cleaning. How wrong i was. After pulling it through 2 times with DavyT63's pull through and once with mine in Brighton this rifle went from producing 4 to 5 inch groups at 30 metres (due to flyers) to pellet on pellet groups with the same pellets. After these 3 pull throughs and a change or silencer which wasnt the cause (I tested the silencer first) i shot a lased 64 metre rabbit from the siting unrested position witnessed. It now shoots 1 hole groups without really testing me. Other things that you need to look at is your silencer (if you have one fitted) Is it secure? If its not it will cause the odd flyer as the silencer moves and it not correctly aligned. ATB Si Edited October 14, 2011 by zini Quote Link to post
The Duncan 802
It can't hurt to have a clean barrel to start with eh, Zini? At least you know you're starting from base zero. Quote Link to post
Dellboyzz 0
Hey all thanks for the replies. I have done all that you said pulled it throw and was surprising with how much came out but still not any better. Also removed silencer and still not any better. tried also a few other brands pellets but still the same. So have taken back to the shop where it was purchased. And they are sending it off to there gun smiths to be sorted out free of charge and will returned on Wednesday. Thank you for all your replies. ATB Trafford Quote Link to post
Sweeney-Todd 208
Hi Dell. What a bugger mate, nothing worse than a rifle playing up is there. Could be a loading issue, if the probe isnt engaging the pellet smack in the middle, it may loading the pellets on the scew, or may not be loading far enough into the breech. Good way to check, is to run the rifle very low on air, then fire a few pellets into a bucket of clean water. Pick out the pellets and have a look at the condition of them, look for obvious damage. Should give you an idea if its a loading problem or not mate. ATB. Bill. Quote Link to post
