ianh 83
take your time mate, bond with it and you'll know when its ready. personally and from what i been told (only on my first myself) id wait untill about 12 months to start properly but the odd run here and there aint gonna hurt, try get it out to watch a made dog a few times first if possible, i didnt have that chance but its often said to be a good idea, and most importantly just easy runs at first that he has chance of getting, so not to dissapoint and frustrate him which can make em lose interest apparently or start yapping whilst running Quote Link to post
the big chief 3,099
ide try it now on a very easy run if it does good give it another then a month off and same again mate nice and steady atb Quote Link to post

wirral countryman 2,110
I think you've been given some pretty poor advice there mate, first of all you don't put a pic up so you cannot see if its heavilly built or light, its size and weight are very important before you go running it,also if you intend to lamp this pup then encouraging it to put its nose down and hunt is the last thing you want it to do,if it misses the rabbit on the lamp it will simply put its head down and hunt on,clearing all the rabbits in the field to ground,we all get impatient waiting for a pup to mature but it has to have a decent chance of catching or all manner of problems could occur,if it lacks speed it could yap and theres no going backwards once its done, some pups,ie:the likes of whippets can be ready for a run at 7 months to try them out but anything larger will not be ready as some have warned untill nearer 14 months.Starting a dog a bit later can extend the working life of a lurcher quite considerably at the other end,so its swings and roundabouts,at the end of the day it sounds like you've already made up your mind to run it anyway and most of us f*cked up our first lurcher,so the choice is yours, just my opinion on the posts so far,WM Quote Link to post
jay1310 0
no ant made my mind up thats y ive asked for advice cos i dont want to f**k it up just everyone seems to have sum very different opinions on lurchers so ferreting cud actually f**k it up in your opinion? cheers jay Quote Link to post
richie1000 13
if your wanting a dog to do both day and night i would say wait till hes at least 12 months old do all the day hunting you can with him then about 15 or 16 months old introduce the lamp its a lot easier to take a day hunting dog lamping then the other way round Quote Link to post
