secretagentmole 1,701
Mrs Mole has just purchased something for our winter trips hunting that is a godsend. Indeed I have long missed having one ever since I slid on some ice winter beach fishing and knackered the one I had! This is the ubiquitous Kelly or Ghillie kettle. What is this I hear you cry? Well it appears to be a spin off from the Irish space industry. Developed on the lochs of Ireland, it appears to be a spin off solid fuelled rocket with water cooled casing. Solid fuel, such as twigs, pine cones, straw etc is loaded into the base. The upper part is filled with water and placed on top. The assemblage is ignited through a hole in the bottom, which also serves as an additional air feed. The roar as this thing gets up to temperature is quite startling. Indeed you could be forgiven for thinking that the gout of flame at the top is an optical illusion, trust me, it is not, that is a darned hot flame. The upshot being you can boil over 1.4 litres of water in a tad over 3 minutes, using nowt more than what you can find on the ground or a few sticks out of a bundle of kindling. They also do cooking sets that enable you to use the embers to heat beans, sausages, eggs, bacon, indeed, whatever you set your appetite on, steak perhaps, I kid you not! All this folds away into a bag less than a foot and a half high by under 10 inches wide! They are affordable too, so if you do not fancy stale, flasked drinks, and want to have a nice hot drinkie, have a look at this beastie! http://www.tent-shopibexcamping.co.uk/ghillie-kettle----the-explorer-10lt---the-one-with-the-whistle-festival-cooking-1739-p.asp Quote Link to post
Sweeney-Todd 208
Hi Mike. That is without doubt a lovely bit of kit, and worth the money too. Bill. Quote Link to post
secretagentmole 1,701
It is Bill, works well, actually works better once it has been used a few times, the soot builds up and helps transfer the heat better as it is black and spreads the heat! Quote Link to post

pedro68 3
i have one of these ,they are great, i use mine on fishing trips all the time , as you say its boils real quick and just using twigs and stuff lying around , i dont have the cooking kit, but you can use a small frying pan on the embers as the cooking kit is pretty small.beats a flask every time ,now my mates just wait til im boiling it up and appear with there cups all set up for there coffee , i stick to frying bacon or eggs to put on a roll, nowt fancy but tastes great on a day when the weather is bad and you need some descent grub instead of crisps and chocolate. tegater 789
I've had one for a few years now and they are good, although I only seem to use mine in the summer, when out with the fly rod for the day in some remote loch. The first one I bought I had to send back, because everytime I boiled it, I had very small amounts of silvery bits floating on my cuppa each time I made it, and no matter how many times I boiled it, it never stopped. Anyway the replacement never had any problems, and like most blokes messing around with fire to make a brew is just fun! Quote Link to post
