Well done that man! Please go for it: I'll contact my MP and would really urge people to do the same.   Do you think there would by any benefit it doing an article on this in the CMW? With a link

This is what I couldn't understand when I looked into this a few years ago: to me it makes no sense that you can do it to horses and not to dogs. I even contacted a freeze branding company, and we tal

More correspondence from the RSPCA. My response to their original email;   Thank you for your reply.   As I have said in my initial enquiry, microchipping is an excellent means of indentifying a

Just wondering about the practicalities - my dogs are white bodied jack russells with broken coats and a hairy brindle lurcher - would freeze marking really be visible on them? I'm thinking about the difference in size, texture and physical make up between horses, cows and dogs. The vast majority of horses are dark coloured with smooth hair and large firm areas that can be marked and visible, would this be the case with dogs?

As Gem says a mixture of numbers and letters would vastly increase the number of combinations available. 4 numbers would give a total of 10000 possible combinations. 3 letters and a number would give a total of 175760 possible combinations. Every additional letter would increase the total by a factor of 26. Every number would increase the total by a factor of 10.

With a brindle dog the brand should show up fine. With a hairy dog the brand would be less distinct, but that could be overcome by regularly clipping the area of the brand. With a white dog the brand would show as bare skin. Obviously this system (like every other system) has its limitation. When used in combination with microchipping and ear tattooing I believe it will be very effective and make a real difference. I have changed around the order of my original posts so that the action one is the first one, to prevent people having to read the whole thread.

This will not be an overnight fix. Indeed it may not come to anything at all, but I think it is worth a try. Thanks for the pin Malt!

Skycat I think it would be a great idea to write an article on it in the CMW. I will send you the link to the e-Petition once I get confirmation from the Home Office that it is live. The Hunting Act came about not because the antis are a large group. Nor do they represent the majority view. However, the know how to make a lot of noise. If we as a community can make hlaf as much noise then I think that we have a chance of changing the law.

You won't find any vets in the UK who will brand dogs at the moment as its illegal. I have spoken to my local vet and they are interested in finding out the answer. I think that I will put a poster up in my vets as soon I get the e-Petition link sorted. Vets aren't needed to brand horses and cattle, merely an 'appropriately trained person'.

I have had my horses freeze branded and it is quite large which is great on a big animal but wondering if it would work on a terrier say 10 ins high. Must say never had any fear of horses being stolen that have been freeze branded. It does seem like a good idea.

I have had a dog stolen & returned 10 months later because it was chipped so I support anything that reduces the crime.

This will do nothing to reduce the theft.

Longers sentences for the criminals, a police force that actually takes it seriously & most of all, people NOT BUYING dogs that are far too cheap would reduce the theft rate.

The thought of seeing all my dogs running around with this visible branding on them is a no no to me. My dogs working ability is the most important thing but I still don't want them to look like a mini hoarding board.

Have you looked into countrys that you can get it done in and would it be cheaper or easier to go on a holiday with the dogs to get it done?

Ive tried doing some research. The only places I can identify so far are USA and Australia/New Zealand. I can't find the appropriate legislation for Republic of Ireland or the continent. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it!
