DUCKWING 302
WELL LADS , IT CAN AND HAS BEEN DONE NUMEROUS TIMES ....... THING IS ............. IT TAKES A CERTAIN TYPE OF SINGLE MINDED JUKEL . A FRIENDS DOG WAS KNOW TO HAVE ONE OR TWO RIGHT UP INTO HIS DOTAGE , BUT LIKE I SAID HE WAS " SOME " DOG ........ PERSONALLY IVE NEVER HAD A MATURE RED STAG SINGLE HANDED WITH MY DOGS............ HOWEVER ..... IVE HAD A RED X SIKA THAT WAS FECKIN HUGE , AS WELL AS SOME " BIG " PARK FALLOW / SIKA STAGS , THOUGH WE DID HAVE A MONSTER RED IN THE LAKES THAT WAS AS BIG AS ANY CROSSED PARK RED THOUGH THIS WAS WITH TWO DOGS MY FIRST FALLOW STAG SINGLE HANDED WAS KILLED BEFORE I WAS 14 .............. TO BE HONEST , IVE NEVER REALLY LOOKED ON THE DEER JOB AS A BIG DEAL , IT WAS SOMETHING WHICH I GREW UP WITH AND EXPECTED A GOOD RUNNING DOG TO DO DONT GET CARRIED AWAY LADS ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post

THE STIFFMEISTER 15,927
When he was in his prime...Minshaws Famous Dog Blue regularly took reds singlehanded in the lakes but was more often ran doubled up..I have seen the pics and they are some size of a deer...rather them carrying them than me..but as ever It is left to Duckwing to add a modicum of common sense into the subject... whin 463
took large deer in suffolk stirlng up in the heelands, to me i would take them if there nowt else there, give me a good roe, catch ,gut it ,on my back with it, dont need freinds to help or organised parties , i prefer one or two people , we had a few red hinds a few young bucks in scotland and suffolk pre ban , but the real big ones are better left to graze ,i have always poached so only take what i can carry, butcher ,on the spot all the best to me red deer stags are not worth the bother with dogs Quote Link to post
jacob 28
Dog on left saluki, bull, greyhound 28in, bitch bull, greyhound 25in. Red stag very fecking heavy! it takes some bottle to let go the slip on something that size Quote Link to post
snoopdog 1,256
its the dog with the bottle its not the man who holds the slip ... Quote Link to post
juckler123 707
You guys are heroes,...the 'New Forest Reds' are a wee bit too much deer for me I'll stick to 'flushing' the wee ones... Thems the same strain we have in the midlands bigger than the scottish reds by a fair bit do you reckon they reach this size because of the climate and grazing. Quote Link to post
whin 463
juckler haveing hunted deer for a good few decades the size is all to do with feed , saw forest red deer who were masive in suffolk only an eejit would have slipped a dog on him , he towerd over my old crew cab stood in the middle of westlton forest he had just came out a feild of sugar beat , ,what i would say the dogs they breed in america ie coyote hounds who have been selectivly bred are the right stuff for the red deer job some weere 90 pounds in weight but could run like a smaller more work men like lurcher but not saw many dogs like that, big sid and sol two of my half bred tor of dartmoor line took several sika fallow single handed, i always slipped them on reds doubled beacause off the injury factor to the dogs and well im out to end it quick as i can they were both 65 odd pound and mean ,the only salukis crosses ive saw that didnt need much coaxing for foxes and other toothed game ,but all in all when you do it for shillings give me roe every day or night . caught a male sika one afternooon he took the dogs a mile into open wood land i had to gut him , me and a mate made a stretcher to carry him to a conveint place to butcher him ,to much hassle all the best .the red deer on the hill, have neither the feeding plus there a lot up in the heelands o scotland great running land but rough and well open to eyes every were , the deer game is or was agood earner but as long as the freeaera full good enough now all the best ,who take there chance Quote Link to post
mole catcher 1
here in suffolk the red stags are very much an impressive animal and i for one wouldnt slip my dog on one, why? because i value the health and welbeing of my dog and against a beast of that size odds on your dog will come second best. Saying that the good old muntys when they stand their ground can be a little lively  Quote Link to post
Guest Frank
Some dogs will grab the arse, others will grab the throat ( instinct ) . The ones that grab the throat, are the goodens. Frank. Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
had a mature red stag and a hind on same night this season and they certainly weren`t run single handed though, 4 of us towed our bollox off trying to lift them into my pick up when we skinned them off the stag had small holes in his neck from where he had been rutting with another stag, we`ll have his big mate next time This season hey... who's a naughty boy then.. Awsome pics there WEX... it ain't easy getting to shooting distance on those big buggers so to get close enough to slip a dog (which would be pretty damn close i imagine ).. thats good stalking Quote Link to post
jacob 28
its the dog with the bottle its not the man who holds the slip ... more a bit of both ,i think, tell me you wouldnt be a bit nervous slipping your dog on a deer of that size. Quote Link to post
