Life has changed a lot here since the 2007 Deer Act Amendment, but in principle you MUST use AAA.

This could get very deep and very complicated, and lets not go the Humane Dispatch route too far, but there are times a shotgun is the tool of choice, there are a lot more times when the appropriate rifle is better suited.

I know someone who was having problems in a plantation, he got it ok'ed for 12g ssg at very short range but it was designated as pest control as they were doing so much damage

OK'd by who, as this is nothing to do with licensing, and the law still says AAA, unless dispatching an injured animal. Certainly in England and Wales anyway.

Anyone considering using a shotgun on deer must make sure they are in a lawfull position to do so, for example for last resort pest control where usual methods cannot be used and you have tried all other methods beforehand, as stated there is a minimum shot size and apart from humane dispatch there will be very few situations where you can meet the pest control conditions criterea. So to sum it up if you still think you need to use a shotgun on deer please contact the relevant legal bodies and ask them the question because if you rely on stuff written on internet forums you will come unstuck. atb nasher

Maybe things changed and I missed it but............

I believe you will find in England and Wales it MUST be AAA.

In Scotland it is AAA or Larger!

Ignoring the Humane dispatch element here!

Correct, and the issue comes when you injury one, through incorrect shot size, and it does a runner. This might seem pedantic, but pattern SG and then pattern AAA, and I know which I would use. I am guessing these roe are not getting shot at 10 metres. On a forum like this it doesn't help our cause, discussing something which clearly breaches the deer act. If your going to do it, just do it.
