I would have thought a disinfected scalpel would probably be better as would leave a clean but bigger cut for all the pus to come out of, with a needle you will be there squeezing for ages and i would have thought would risk it getting infected. I would put ice on the area before hand may help with numbing it. and have loads of savlon /dettol or similar on hand aswell

is there anyway of doing something without using sharps?

Not sure mate, I would have thought the doctors could give some sort of cream to help reduce it or bring it out, but like you say you have had it 3 years and been to the doctors already. With ice it wont hurt that much and will feel great when the puss comes out and the pressure on it starts to ease

where abouts on your neck? not hovering over your jugular is it? be careful but thats how i would handle it, just get everything sorted before you do it, disinfectant etc

Stick a shotgun on it and pull the trigger......a nice heavy number 3 should be perfect. 2 things will come of this.......1 you'll forget about the boil and 2 we'll f*****g forget about you.... :thumbs:

Reminds of the guy who tried to shoot a wart off his finger using a 12 guage he supposidly found under a hedge, resulting in the loss of his finger. Bellend! :laugh:
