bshadle 5
With a beagle and a 12 ga SxS. 20 ga if I'm feeling more sporting than hungry. Seriously though, here in Pennsylvania it's illegal to trap rabbits except as pests, and then you need a "wildlife pest control license" or be the actually owner of the property. Can't speak to the laws of the other states. Edited March 21, 2007 by bshadle Quote Link to post

Mitch 0
I trap rabbits in Australia with #1 footholds, and snares. I often get a location with bare ground which i cannot read the runs off. So i use foothold traps at there feeding piles with some bait around. Works really well Quote Link to post
Coneytrappr 30
If I was American, which I am not, I would be gang-setting their warrens with 110 conibears. No mercy. Quote Link to post
DUCKWING 302
WELL LADS , IF I WERE A YANK TRYING TO TRAP RABBITS ......... THERES ONLY ONE SORT OF FELLA I WOULD ATTEMPT TO CONTACT ........ THE LIKES OF SNAREMAN , PEG & GUN AND WOODGA !!! ........ MAYBE EVEN THROW IN SOME CASH AND GET A DVD ................ THAT FACT IS , LADS WHO ARE REGULARY CATCHING LARGE NUMBERS ARE OBVIOUSLY DOING SOMETHING CORRECT ............ MAYBE THE YANKS WOULD USE STEEL CABLE SNARES FOR A WHILE ..... BUT TO BE HONEST I THINK THEY WOULD SOON REVERT TO TRIED AND TESTED METHODS ........ AS FOR CONIBEARS , YEP THEY WORK WELL ............. BUT ...... IMO .............. WHY USE A TRAP WHICH IS HEAVIER TO LUG AROUND AND 10 TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN A BRASS SNARE AND LESS EFFECTIVE IN THE MAJORITY OF SITUATIONS ? ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post

WHY USE A TRAP WHICH IS HEAVIER TO LUG AROUND AND 10 TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN A BRASS SNARE AND LESS EFFECTIVE IN THE MAJORITY OF SITUATIONS ? ALL THE BEST DUCKWING a very good question duckwing,,why indeed ? but it is still a very effective tool in the right situation, i trapped probably over 1000 rabbits last year with mk 6 fenn traps in situations where i could not used snares, such as fields full of cattle and sheep , grouse moors and some ground that the authorities would not let me snare on, to name but a few.snares would have bin alot easier to carry about and may well have caught as many , but i would have had to wait til stock was moved , grouse shooting had finished or no one was looking Quote Link to post
NightRunner 0
with great difficulty WIth the vast amount of birds of prey, fox and coyote we just don't have the numbers you guys have. Some areas get them in cycles every 6 or so years. But If I had to I would snare them since gang setting would be easy. Quote Link to post
DUCKWING 302
WELL MOLEY , I AGREE THAT CERTAIN TRAPS ARE " VERY " EFFECTIVE , AND THE SNARES NOT ALWAYS THE CHOICE TO BE MADE , HOWEVER ... IN OPEN FELL GRASSLAND WHERE THERES NO HEDGES TO SET COVERED RUNS AND PLENTY OF WARRENS IN THE OPEN ........ WHERE THE HELL WOULD YOU START SETTING A TRAP ? ............... ON THE LAND WE HUNT THERES RUNS LIKE THE A1 ALL OVER YET NO SPECIFIC RUNS THROUGH THE MAJORITY OF DRY STONE WALL .... MOST OF THE WARRENS ARE OVER 25 EYED AND THEY ARE WITHIN 100 YDS OF EACH OTHER COVERING THE FELL ................. HOW MANY TRAPS WOULD YOU NEED TO SET A COUPLE OF ACRES ?.......... THE SNARES WOULD BE JUST THE JOB , AS YOU SAID THE SNARES NOT ALWAYS THE CHOICE , HOWEVER ..... ALL IN ALL ..... I THINK ITS EFFECTIVENESS , IN ANY GIVEN SITUTATION MAKES IT A WINNER IMO OVER THE TRAP ....... BY THE WAY ............ DONT TELL ME YOU CANNOT SNARE THE MOOR BECAUSE THE GROUSE ARE BEING SHOT ............ WHAT ARE THE SHOOTERS DOING STEALING YER SNARES ALL THE BEST DUCKWING Quote Link to post

WHAT ARE THE SHOOTERS DOING STEALING YER SNARES ALL THE BEST DUCKWING on open fields next to the moor i have and do set wires , provided there is no livestock, however if there is stock , a trap set in the rabbit hole is the best choice without a doubt, alot of moors have shared grazing and finding out when 10 different farmers are going to put sheep on the moor can be a right pain i set enuff traps to cover the warren properly , its a bit like how longs a piece of string, some warrens have tight little holes that are a nightmare to set a trap in, some can be among boulders , i suppose its all down to how many traps you own/set and how long you want to be checking them for, some warrens hardly ever hold rabbits but they run them most nights , i trap about 50% of the rabbits going into the holes , especially in summer the grouse shooters don,t want to see snares or traps about on shoot days, its not going to be very good some f****r paying £120 a brace to shoot grouse and having his £3000 lab running round with a snare or trap attached to its foot what i ment was that grouse will run the rabbit and sheep runs that go thru the heather and as a grouse is probably the most expensive gamebird on the plant, you aint going to be working there for long if the keeper comes across a few of his precious birds hung up in a wire i totally agree , snares are cheap , light, easier to set and in the right place can be the best tool for the job, traps are just another tool and if set correctly miss very few rabbits Quote Link to post

DUCKWING 302
MICKEY MATE , YOUR RIGHT , AND ON SOME GROUND THAT WOULD WORK HOWEVER , ON THE FELLS ............................ YOU WOULDNT BE ABLE TO BLOCK THE HOLES ON HALF THE WARRENS WITHOUT A LOT OF CHEW , WITH HOLES IN WALLS ... AMONGST REED BEDS ETC .......... , MY POINT IS , THERES RUNS LIKE THE MOTORWAY ALL OVER , INSTEAD OF TRAPPING MAYBE 50 A DAY ........... THE PLACE COULD BE EASILY SNARED , WITH MINIMUM FUSS MOLEY , YEP , IT WOULDNT GO TOO WELL YOU SNAREING ALL THE GROUSE , THEY ARE BLOODY EXPENSIVE ............. WITHOUT A DOUBT THE TRAPS AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR THE JOB , AND SHOULDNT BE OVERLOOKED ........ SO THEN ................ HOW DO YOU RATE THE FENN MARK 6 ON BIG WINTER RABBITS ? ALL THE BEST DUCKWING i don,t have a problem with them ,winter or summer , most of my trapping is done thru spring and summer, but i have had plenty of big (4lb+) rabbits in the fenns in winter and they hardly moved the trap, depending on the place ,sometimes i block everything and trap any opened up holes the next day , sometimes i trap the best holes and block the rest, sometimes i just trap the best holes and leave the rest alone...at this time of year if i set 30 traps , i would expect somewhere around 30 rabbits in 3 nights, thats just how it works out , mid summer you get a few more than that cos of rabbit numbers, mid winter a few less or the same Quote Link to post
