My grandad use to tell me all the tales of when he was a lad watching his dog run on a sunday morning and so on i was automaticaly hooked and the first time i went out whith some lurcher lads watching there dogs run and kill gave me a real buzz watching them turn n pick up there qaury was priceless but nothing compared to the feeling of when i first ever ran aa pup id brought on my self the feeling of its first ever hard earned catch is something else and i get the same buzz every single time i go out atb oznblue

It was a natural progression for me , from kids running packs of mongrels on anything we came across , with time came better dogs , more experience , more knowledge , the only thing that hasn,t changed is the pleasure I get from watching a dog work .

i used to work on my uncles farm when i was a kid and fell in love with the countryside and the way of life.None of my mates had dogs when we were kids so we used to borrow full hounds and lamp them .That got me started into working dogs

My dad used to shoot us rabbits for supper. As a little kid, seeing his labrador bringing the rabbits back, the whole thing of working as a team with a dog to provide food and sport: it just went on from there. And having dogs which go out, hunt and catch and bring back seems so much more satisfying than just shooting and dog retrieving dead things. There is the whole excitement of the hunt, whether it be lamping, coursing, mooching or whatever. The lurcher is the ultimate hunting partner for me. A dog which can do it all: sometimes I feel as though I'm merely a spectator! Though of course it is me who takes the dogs out to where they can do their job. But for me there's nothing better than seeing your dog carrying back good, free grub.

mine was talking to a bloke in work when i was about 20. he had lurchers since he was a kid. asked him could a go out and see the dogs work. went out every weekend for 2 years before a got my own pup. during the years plenty of daytime/ nighttime work. but i only worked the dogs on hares and rabbits.last lurcher died 2 years ago. these days just ferret with a beddy.but i think a lurcher pup is on the cards maybe in 12 months time. the bloke who took me under his wing is now 70 and still goes out ferreting. im coming up to 50 so i hope im still fit enough to get out when i am that age.

Was taken out at around 6 ferreting, lamping, fishing, nesting etc and thats basically all I did for the next 15 years ( with a few sports thrown in ), the thought of being inside never came into my head I loved being out and busy. The man who first took me ( and basically had me every weekend and a lot of weekdays as a kid) died in March, as I've said before I really miss that we'll never go out ferreting or lamping or sit by the canal or on the beach fishing together, he gave me an up bringing which I'm really grateful for. I really believe that having a positive outlet and interest as a kid is so important any kid can get in trouble but if your out in the field you don't get the chance ( apart from poaching i suppose). The last few years got back into the dogs and ferreting as this is what I want my lad to have, an interest instead of sitting going mad on nintendos and playstations or whatever.

I still haven't got my first lurcher, but all going well I will as soon as I can rent a house that will allow me to build a kennel (bloody nightmare so far).

But I started out shooting/ferreting and then got into falconry. I have a crazy passion for dogs and worked a pointer with the hawks. My world was transformed the first time I went ferreting with a lurcher though! It was the most exciting day ever and I couldn't get enough. I have to admit it took a lot of the appeal of falconry away as a dog is working for you, not for food. So I went out as much as I could and my mate would often be tired after a days hunting so I would borow his dog and go lamping on my own.

Not long now! Can't bloody wait I am literally going mad not having a dog.
