watchman 256
so im out walking the dogs up the field and my older bitch picks up a rabbit, after such a quick pick up a matter of a few yards it was obvious mixy has found this area,so with the pup in hot pursuit she starts running around me not wanting to come right in and give it up,so i thinks got the pup hot on her heals heard plenty times over the years of dogs failing to retrieve in the presence of others so didnt worry to much, called pup over and put her on the slip and called the older bitch in....................she not having any of it and to be fair although she retrieves straight back to hand when lamping she got a bite like a croc and you aint having it till its dead and only good for soup, well they say some dogs are a bit hard mouthed anyway in the past when she not wanting to give up on a rabbit iv purposefully give a hisssssssssssss,if thats a noise at all and she thinks i want her to look on something so she drops the rabbit ready to be slipped, well she not on the slip so she looks around sees nothing and starts to eat the head off it.......................so i threw the fecking lead at her and told her to LEAVE IT,she fecked off twenty yards and carried on almost half way through it by now,f**k you i thought hope it gives you the shits ambled back to the car and she must have gone round me because she was waiting by the boot, get the f**k in there was what she got and home.......................without her fecking dinner of me tonight either. im guessing the pup was the cause she just trying to stamp a bit of authority maybe ........... .H dont think il be invited out much this year with my bitch beng like that.............. Guest vin
my little one had a funny one the other night..she,s always a bit wary of anyone including me(abused rescue dog).when im out alone she brings them back usually live to hand..But when another dog is running with us..She can be a nightmare.sometimes she catches and retrieves, sometimes she will do the usual running around the perimeter in circles waiting for me to go and take it off her... The other night she caught a few but i was running her with a young dog belonging to a mate..so we doubled them up for a few runs just to make sure that the young lads dog caught a few..Well she caught 1 and then gave it to his dog (which he retrieved like an old pro straight to hand)..then his dog caught and she stole it from him and retrieved it nearly all the way back..so then when she caught the next 1 his dog stole it from her...it was quite funny watching them sort it out between them..So we moved onto single dog runs, but on the next run she caught it and ran off with it down the field..she then stood there with the bunny for a while, then dropped it and chased it again..So we gave her a minute to see if she would sort herself out..But no she carried on sqweezing it for fun and running further down the field..So i went down to take it off her..she ran around me like i was trying to take her dinner from her...then dropped it again, then chased it.. I was trying my best to keep calm and see the funny side..but she did it 5 times till she gave it up to me.. I think sometimes she just freaks out when i run her with a dog she does'nt know or trust. . . when i am out with the dog alone she is a different dog..but in company she will always make me look like a complete novice.. I know in the end she will come good but as with all things its gonna take a lot more time and patience.. grit the teeth keep smiling and dont lose your temper.. In the past my dog has had a lot of abuse,so i have to be very careful not to upset her or scare her.. so its the usual praise the good and ignore the bad. Quote Link to post

skycat 6,173
One of my departed old bitches retrieved perfectly all her life, EXCEPT when she'd been in season: then she'd try and eat anything she found: even found her chewing on a very rotten dead hedgehog one day And rabbits were almost swallowed whole: once she was out of the phantom pregnancy mode she reverted to retrieving as usual. Bitches! Quote Link to post
Neal 1,873
My eldest kelpie used to try to live retrieve rats and squirrels but always killed rabbits. However, for the last couple of years, the few catches he has made are invariably eaten by him. He probably thinks that at his age (12) I'll put up with it..and he's right. Quote Link to post
