redpat1 225
After only discovering lurcher and terrier work about a year or so ago I decided to give it a go myself, I have now been totally caught up in it all and have made adjustments with family and work to dedicate as much time as possible to learning the craft, not that I think I will ever stop learning! I am now seriously thinking about getting my own terriers and building them kennels to live in, I have almost talked the wife around!LOL I have read all the terrier, lurcher and hunting books I can lay my hands on but I cant seem to find out if there are any particular terrier breeds that work best with lurchers? and if so how do I know I am getting quality dogs in the first place? I really want to get it all up and running not just for me but for my kids both now and the future as I think if I had discovered this way of life earlier it could have made a massive difference to my teenage years and helped keep me out of trouble. Also posted in the lurcher section, be interesting see how the advice compares. All sensible comments appreciated, we all have to start somewhere. Pat Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
Are you talking about bushing game to the lurchers or terriers to dig with? Might help you get some sensible replys. FTB Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
Thanks FTB, Yeah I should said they will mostly be for digging Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
Well the best advice I can give you is dont touch any of the dirt off here. There may be a few good litters amongst them, but the overwhelming majority will be scatterbred shite. Get in tow with some decent, honest, genuine digging lads from your area. Offer them help and support and ask to accompany you on your permission to go for a dig or two. Hopefully in time they may have a litter on the go from dogs you have dug to. This will take time, and no one said it was easy but IMO it is the only way forward for a newcomer these days to avoid rearing a pile of shite for 2 years just to have to plug it. Hope this helps. FightTheBan 1,147
And if your looking for an answer to your next question, which will be what is the best type? There is none. It is entirely down to your own personal preferance. There are some good and some shite shite in all types, no matter if some clown says blacks are the best etc. Granted some will be harder to find than others but they will be there. So go with what you want as long as there is traceability in the line and they are working to a high standard. This is all just my opinion before someone jumps down my throat. Take it on board or dont, i feel it is constructive, others may not. FTB Edited September 28, 2011 by FightTheBan Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
Cheers L D's, there just seems to be a lot of shite out there with a lot of dodgy fellas only in it for the money£££. I really cant afford to get my pants pulled down and spanked by some dealer who knows all the spiel, like I said this is all fairly new to me. Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
Thanks again FTB, very constructive as usual. I am constantly told black dogs are the way forward but a decent working dog is like rockin orse shite apparently! Quote Link to post
FightTheBan 1,147
Thanks again FTB, very constructive as usual. I am constantly told black dogs are the way forward but a decent working dog is like rockin orse shite apparently! I have seen as many black dogs walk in recent years as I have any other. As I said there are good and bad in all. If you can source some well bred dogs that are producing good workers, go for it irrespective of colour, type, conformation bla bla bla. They are all the same colour when you are digging to them! FTB Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
I am sure there is the risk of jacking no matter what type or breeding but if it comes in to it at all I have to admit that I like the look of the black'uns most of all, but I have heard that they are the hardest to come by for true working specimens. tinytiger 826
what do you want the terrier for, flushing stuff out of cover To lurchers or digging to. Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
A couple for digging to and one for above ground for the days out walking Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
what other options are there realisticly apart from Patts and JRT's as it appears all the others like lakelands, borders and the like are no longer a decent working prospect due to diluted bloodlines Quote Link to post
