redpat1 225
After only discovering lurcher and terrier work about a year or so ago I decided to give it a go myself, I have now been totally caught up in it all and have made adjustments with family and work to dedicate as much time as possible to learning the craft, not that I think I will ever stop learning! I am now seriously thinking about getting my own terriers and building them kennels to live in, I have almost talked the wife around!LOL I have read all the terrier, lurcher and hunting books I can lay my hands on but I cant seem to find out if there are any particular terrier breeds that work best with lurchers? and if so how do I know I am getting quality dogs in the first place? I really want to get it all up and running not just for me but for my kids both now and the future as I think if I had discovered this way of life earlier it could have made a massive difference to my teenage years and helped keep me out of trouble. All sensible comments appreciated, we all have to start somewhere. Pat Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,216
Hard to beat a good russel for bushing. But honestly the breed is a lot less important than getting a pup from lines of good, well worked bushing dogs. Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
I think you are right Ideation but I want terriers that will do ALL terrier work and I have been told so many different things, one of them being that there are hardly any decent working bred JRTs left. Dont shoot me down as I am not sure how true any of it is, which is why I am so confused about it all. Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Now i KNOW that there are folk out there that have them, but in my opinion it's very tough to get any terrier doing ALL aspects of terrier work. Hunting rabbits with a digging dog can lead to big holes being dug to bunnies. There are plenty of decent working bred russels out there. . . . . but just like any decent bred dogs, you have to do your homework to find them. Pats are the 'in thing' these days, for various reasons. Quote Link to post
the big chief 3,099
plumers are grate working dogs some make good allrounder and so do patterdales of the right working lines Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
I should have said that they will mostly be digging dogs, great suggestions so far Quote Link to post
the big chief 3,099
patterdales then get a good one because ther is plenty of shite out there Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
Thanks gafer, I really fancy a patterdale but I cant afford to waste my money on shite and I am worried I will end up with a lemon! I know there is always that chance anyway but I want to try and stack the odds in my favour Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,216
Ah, sorry for the confusion rp, but you said "work with lurchers", so i assumed that above ground work would be the mainstay. My earlier advice still stands, forget breed, just look for a terrier man who has bred a litter for their own use out of two experianced dogs that are doing everything you want the pup to do, from lines of dogs on both sides that did the same Forget breeds and forget fancy names. At the end of the day it's a 'terrier'. Quote Link to post
dymented 2,220
theres a few descant russlles about ,only get a plumber if your going to bush rabbits theres more black dogs than anything else why ? cause most will work .get one thats got good breeding in it and your 90% there bud once you go black you wont turn back Quote Link to post
redpat1 225
Yeah sorry ideation, I didnt want to be to graphic as I am never to sure if digging offends some people in the lurcher section. I wouldnt mind a few terriers for digging along with one that will mostly work above ground for long walks out Quote Link to post
bunny killer 19
a friend of mine who works mainly rabbits has got a nice litter of rough coated russels,,the mother and father are both well worked dogs,,if you are interested i can pm you my mates number,,,, Quote Link to post
BROCK DOG 126
I would say your best bet is a well breed patt but don't rush into things just wait for the right pup to come up atb and wish you the best of luck BD Quote Link to post
