Simoman 110
How can speed not be important? The clue is in the name running dog,Afast dog doesn't mean its charging around the place, crashing into stuff. But it means it can make a mistake and still have time to get back on tracks. Don't think anyone is saying it AIN'T important.it's just not the be all and end all in a lurcher's makeup..yes it does have to be quick enough to catch it's quarry but that's about as much use as it needs to be imo? All the things that Moo mentioned are imo of more significance than just blinding speed? ATB Andy. Spot on Andy, it was originally stated in the thread that speed was "the" most important thing in a lurcher, its thats so why dont we all own greyhounds? Its because you do need speed, of course you do but its not the most improtant attribute, there are lots of fast dogs out there which are shit, they have no stamina, poor feet, no bottle, no nose, no constitution, no strike etc etc, so no speed isnt the main attibute, when foxing was legal my dogs were mainly fox dogs, they were FAST ENOUGH to catch foxes, but what good was speed without bottle, strike, stamina, constitution?? I have seen dozens upon dozens of faster dogs but what use were they if they didnt have the neccesary attiributes, speed IS important, of course it is but its not the be all and end all............... Was speed the most important attribute in a hare/fox/rabbit/deer dog??????????? There are also plenty of dogs that kill fox for fun, trouble is unless there in a hole or ran down with a vehicle they cannot catch them.Speed may not be the most important, but it is very important,You can have good feet wind ect,but unless you just want to bounce rabbits of hedges at night you aint going to much eles,Try and catch a hare, deer in the day with a slow dog,Its not going to happen. I think we all would agree that speed is important, just seems to be more important to some than others, never yet owned a dog that wasn't quick enough for what i wanted, im planning a litter next year and when thinking about the stud dog to use, speed was way down on the list compared to the other attributes i want to add and keep within my kennels................ Ideation 8,216
weasle, you seem to be confusing the argument that speed is not the most important attribute, certainly no more important than many other, with the idea that speed is not important at all, which NO ONE is arguing. . . . . . sniper 30
speed isnt everything, not at all. if the dog can't change through its gears, then its pointless having the fastest dog. i think that the dogs heart is important, coz if it doesnt want to catch is quarry, then it wont MOO how is that brindle dog bred, real nice stamp... artic 595
They are all important as each other. Lurchers have many natural skill's, so more importantly the dog needs to know how and when to use them. This will hopefully come with experience. If the dog don't produce by 12 months old then do what many do........... cull it. Quote Link to post
