saxonmaster 74
Just would like to know how many of you use dogs in falconry and what dogs you use. I planned on getting a 2nd lurcher but now really thinking on getting a dog for falconry maybe a german or english pointer but would like to hear your thoughts and views. Also does anyone use a lurcher and if so how does that work im sure i have read on here that some are using lurchers. Can anyone suggest any good books, dvds or anyother information on training a dog to use in falconry and the different breeds and characteristics. Thanks Quote Link to post
arcticgun 4,548
i useboth my saluki and terrier to flush rabbits etc for my harris, maybe not as handy as a gwp etc but does for my needs, she is fine with all my dogs and ferrets, Edited September 28, 2011 by arcticgun Quote Link to post
paulus 26
as long as it respects the bird and does the job you can use any dog, however its alot more handy if it will, hunt and then go on point as this will give you the chance to get into the best possition for a sucesfull flight Quote Link to post
grovsey 74
if ur getting a pointer you got to think the dog will not be bolting rabbits for you as the dog has to be encouraged to point not bolt game.for that you want a springer (i got 3) or a cocker ,both are great dog as long as you train them proper and keep ontop of one ,but that said so does a point need to be trained propper, im training a pup springer at the mo and she is 8 month old and she has not been allowed to bolt any game and wont be worked proper till next season ,your dog has to be rock steady and more so around falconry birds a english setter needs alot of open space to run propper and suits imo moorland , there is a dog for every occasion p.s i would not have a running dog working with game as you know they want to chase the quarry as much as the bird does pps dont disregard the vizsla as (i got one ) Edited September 28, 2011 by grovsey Quote Link to post

I think i would prefer a pointer but wouldnt rule out a springer or cocker as i would like to use a dog for rough shooting and working with the lurcher. What do you prefer mate springer or cocker and how different are they in the field. Do you have any books or dvds that you would recommend to get some information off we have a gun dog training coarse not far from me which ill be going to see at some point. Quote Link to post

jasper65 6
I have a Brittany that likes to range out a fair way which is probably down to me and my training. it points well and even used to point the flys around its food bowl when it was a pup. Its now 4 and still pretty scatty although it has calmed down a bit. the best soution for this dog before its worked is to get it out and let its burn up some energy first before any seriouse work is done with it Quote Link to post
