lurchers 2,867
My brother has had his line for a long time, very well respected in the game, a VERY good keeper of dogs, his dogs go all over the country. He has even been quoted one of the greatest most dedicated gamekeepers in the uk. My father R.I.P. taught him the majority of starting off. Dogs that apparently cant be trained were sent to my father to put right. My brothers standards are very high, he has people from all over the world paying very large amounts to shoot for a few hours. So his dogs have to be GOOD. They are small things, mostly black. And thats in the North East. Go for someone who who knows the crack. Best of luck, i can ask, if you want. i would go for yours mate all day long.as gamekeepers work there dogs 6-7days a week shooting and havnt got time for feild trials,so they would probably produce the best shooting dogs in my eyes and if your brother is getting a good response from other people that must be a good thing. saxonmaster 74
i have been promising myself a cocker spaniel for almost a year now in a few months my quest will become serious. im looking for the most respected, consistent, and forward thinking breeder in the uk. Who is it ?where are they and why do you think they meet the criteria? i am hoping my new pup will be a worker first and maybe go on to trial depending on how capable i can be. There are hundreds of litters being bred and its always pot luck no matter the lineage, but i reckon a good dog is 70% breeding and 30% handling. its a serious request and in time i will blog the pups progress. regards Keith alright mate i think your inbox is full mate Quote Link to post
amentalcat 3
Any bitch with Maesydderwen, Wernffryd or (my personal favourite!) Nancarrow in her lines should be a good'un. Good luck in your search Ali Quote Link to post

Exactly what I was thinking when the OP asked for best WORKING cocker kennel - nothing to do with trials. Not sure if they are still about but Rustaloue were top notch with Peter Everitt-Stewart at the helm - think it was his wife who specialised in cockers with many going to the USA for quail shooting. Personally I have never taken too much notice of how many this that and the other a dog has in its pedigree and we are now on the 6th generation and haven't bred a bad one yet - these are springers though. Also, I'm still not sure about this massive trend (well down here anyway) towards cockers with springers seemingly the poor relation in terms of what's in vogue? Talking to a gamekeeper friend the other day about what changes he's likely to do to the drives this season, his answer was simple... "Get the bl@@dy cockers out of them!!" And he is a cocker man! Just a thought. Mike Quote Link to post

spec 45
are nancarrow any good ? Yes! Hedley Millington RIP understood more about the breed than most have forgotten (along with Cyril Gwynne, Peter Jones) They didn't call him the cocker man for nothing. You're unlikely to get a cocker with very recent Nancarrow breeding though as the man's been dead almost four years. My bitch has a nancarrow/cornish bred dam and sire out of maesydderwen kestral (who was also owned by Millington), and that's the kind of breeding I'd look for again in a pup. Quote Link to post
