how to learn a dog to jump

Recommended Posts

iv the same problem, my dog will jump a 6ft wall but will not jump a 6 bar gate, it crys and trys to find another way over when its fully capable of jumping it, try going out during the day and call it from the other side, maybe a slice of bacon to encourage it

My bitch used to be like this. I started small like little wire fences and that then just went higher and higher. Mine will do quite a high gate now no probs. Sounds daft but you've got to climb over it aswell and show them how to do it. If you get them jumping always use a sound for it. I use a sharp "HUP" noise and that works well. It helps to get them exited to get over aswell so get a nice treat or a rabbit skin dummy then throw it over and shout HUP! Just remember that if it won't jump it maybe too high and they will only end up hurting theirself.

Each to their own but this worked a treat for me so good luck!

thanks everyone... at one point my bitch was jumping 3 foot high barb wire.....but now cos i aint worked her in months....shes looking over it.. cryinging and welping... i put a 4 ft bord infront of the kennel door...but shes not doing it atallll...

Try a 3ft board. Go smaller until she jumps it without even thinking and then build it back up 6 inches at a time. She might not even realise the height is increasing!

To be honest I don't like dogs that jump, too much barbed wire where I live, would rather lose a rabbit than get a ripped dog.

Trouble with that is a dog thats not been taught to jump properly might try and scrabble over a fence (barbed or not) if their close enough behind the quarry and can see it the other side but a dog that's been taught to jump, will know to keep their feet off the fence when jumping .....
