Hedgehogs climbing?

Recommended Posts

I let my lurcher bitch out for a run in the garden earlier, she immediatly went to a small tree thats engulfed in ivy just 3 yards from her pen, the tree grows against a four foot wall which is the boundry of the garden, she was on something and kept jumping back and forth over the wall and and looking into the ivy on both sides, i was also looking around but could see nothing, i thought maybe a pheasant had been there and had gone over the wall earlier, she got up onto the wall and tried to get into the thick of the ivy, only her back legs could be seen at this stage and i had a stick ready as i expected a rat to appear at any second, then she starts to to emerge backwards ever so gently and to my surprise she was holding a hedgehog gingerly between her teeth, i was amazed, i never heard of hedgehogs climbing before, i took it from her unharmed and released it, has anyone ever heard of hedgehogs climbing trees or does it happen often? :hmm:

They're excellent climbers, when we were young kids we had a couple as pets the old man picked them up on his travels. Our back garden was surrounded by a ten foot wall but every couple of days they would disappear and we would eventually find them in one of the neighbours gardens.

Woke up a few weeks back about 3am with one of the terriers squealing it's bag off. Thought it had got a cat or somehow boned one of the other dogs threw the wire. Ran out the back to find the terrier glued to a big f****r off a hedgehog. Blood all over the pen. Got it off him and had a few needles to pull out of his face, there was loads on the floor of the pen. Went back to bed an checked 10 mins later hedgehog still curled up in a ball t the corner of the garden were I left it. It was away when I got up for work the next day. Never seen it until a month later when I came across it squashed on the main road outside our development, speggetti everywhere lol

Its funny how none of the major news outlets reporting the decline of the red squirrel and the hedgehog offer any opinions on the cause, It is pretty much common knowledge that reds are being pushed northwards by the introduced greys. If mroe people culled greys than reds might have at least half a chance. And badgers are a major predator of hedgehogs I believe.
