I use stable cleaner, which is harmless and has not effected my ferrets, finally got rid of my tick infestation by using johnsons spray (after stupidly using hay in the hutch from the pet shop). I also use vet powder, its for horses but works great on both the dog and ferrets. also works on any scraps that ive had on my hands while out. And i always keep a bottle of tea tree oil which if diluated properly is a great anti septic. I bought some tick removers from pets at home, 5er and they fit around both small and large ticks

Agree on the Virkon, its great stuff but you have to make sure it doesn't touch any metal fittings you have in/on your hutch like feed/water bowls, mesh fronts, door hinges as it will seriously rust everything..... If you have any new snares you want the shine off then stick them in a bucket of strong dilution Virkon and see the results....

When i had lots of cages to sort out i aquired an old Aqua vac hoover , after i had got out the shavings etc with a dust pan i would use the aqua vac to get in all the corners & then I would use a steam cleaner with a concentrator nozzle , steams effective at killing almost anything , cheap & safe , just allow to dry the cages inside like you would after using disinfectant

I am reading that steaming will deal with fleas & ticks that may be lurking in the cages
