watchman 256
im no expert but from the many pest control companies iv seen around the industrial areas and office premises that iv worked at the harris seems to be the bird of choice, mate of mine flys a female and takes a lot of rabbits with it Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
Harris and redtail's will scare feral's but they will not catch any.. imo the only bird that will put a dent in the feral's is a male peri but around factories is not a ideal flying ground..can you not find there roosting spot's and crack them with air rifles. shotgun tim 27
no shooting aloud around the factory i shoot the rabbits there but there must be over 300 flying around in a flock i shoot any that go into the buildings as they make food products Quote Link to post
grovsey 74
harris is perfect to clear them away from the place but u wont be catching them ,u could do it on a lamp at night when there in roost and fly the bird at them that way , to kill them of is tricky as flying a falcon round fatorys is not good imo and asking for the bird to get injured what experiance you got with birds ? jasper65 6
Remiinds me of a phone call I had a when I was advertiseing a proven Tiercel Pere in the old Cage & Aviary, a guy rang me and asked me would I want to swap a female Harris for it, back then it wasn't a bad deal as the Harris was worth around £750, to cut to the chase we got talking and he mentioned his mate had a Barn Owl which had caught a few voles but couldn't understand why it wouldn't take Rabbits? he went on telling me they have ferret them for the bird but each time it ignored them , by this time I was beginning to think he was on a wind up but nope he was totaly seriouse, this is the good thing about the internet, I don't have to laugh at them on the phone anymore I can read the stuff everyday on the computer I think shotgun tim is saying he has flown a Barny! but also has 2500 acres of Rabbits and Hare land to hunt on if he had a different bird Got to agree with the other lads Tim! a male Harris will do the job you want it to do. later on after you've learned a bit about conditioning you could take up a silly tame female imprint Spar which will definitely nobble them for you . Millet 4,497
You will scare the feral's no bother but you will have to be there up untill it is dark as they will just come back to there roosting spot's and nest's once you have left.. Quote Link to post

Its a shame how these lovely hawks have come to this, they transformed Falconry and opend up alot of doors for the bird control business's and display teams, plus a nice relaxed trouble free form of Hunting...... I can see Goshawks going the same way mate, perhaps not so dramatic but its not far off. far too many hawks being bred these days exceeding demand.... the other thing I hate is the way the Harris is used as a stepping stone to a Gos and passed from pillar to post. I was talking to a old falconer the other week who said to me that he doesn't like the direction falconry is heading these days, I think he is right expecially when you see the amount of birds forsale these days.....
